Adding custom sounds (for n00bs)

Postby joe_rogers_11155 on Wed Nov 04, 2009 5:38 am

Hey, guys. I'm afraid I have overlooked it or something. But I would like to know step-by-step how to add custom sounds to my mod. I have a few questions and clarifications.

1. I see the tutorials for adding custom voices, for NPC actors. I should have little trouble doing that if I follow them correctly.

2. I do not see a tutorial for adding custom ambient_generic sounds.

3. I do not see a tutorial for adding custom "music" which can be controlled in the Game Options under "Music Volume".

Can you guys please be patient and give me some quick advice, or point out the website or link that I am somehow missing? Thanks a lot!

Regarding #2, AFAIK you just place an ambient_generic, put in the path to the WAV, and make sure the custom WAV is somewhere within the sounds/ folder, and that you pack it (see my sig :P) when you distribute the map.

He's doing a mod.

Joe, EVERY sound is in sound folder.

I think music is controlled by the fact that the music is MP3, and normal generics WAV.

interesting, i'll keep experimenting, thanks.

So I should drop custom .wav's in... "99bolts/sound" ...correct? just making sure. is there anything i need to edit with notepad to make the sound work?

Absolutely nothing. It will replace the GCF sound or if totally new, simply appear in the "search sounds" taskpane.

Just whack something in there now and take a look. Make sure you're in the right SDK config.

The reason I'm asking is because i have not "made" my mod directory for 99 Bolts yet. I dont know how to do that yet. I've been working in the Ep2 version of Hammer, and working all my custom content by dropping it in the Ep2 directory for now...so I've been dropping the sounds in a folder I made called ".../half life 2 episode 2/ep2/sounds" and they are not showing up in Hammer yet.

Until I can find the proper tutorials to make my mod's own directory, where can I drop the new sounds for my maps in the ep2 directory?

Be aware the folder is "sound" not "sounds". Anywhere in that folder will do. Also, keep in mind that the rate has to be below 48000Hz.

hey changing the name of the folder worked for me. I now have my custom sounds in-game. Problem solved. Thanks a million, guys.
