Reskinning Issues With Half-Life 2 Models

Postby Groxkiller585 on Tue Jul 27, 2010 7:01 pm

Ok, so i'm trying to reskin a vortigaunt, but it simply will not work. I've placed the files in the correct directory:

Code: Select all
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\groxkiller585\half-life 2\hl2\materials\models\Vortigaunt

However ingame there are no changes. All the files are named exactly the same. I did not change the VMT's either. Is there something I missed, or is the reskin process different then from Portal? In Portal the folder skin overwrites the GCF skin.

I've also tried reskinning a combine soldier, but the same thing happened, despite the files/folder names/locations being identical.

That's odd, I don't have any problems with reskins in my HL2 client. Wild guesses would be your sv_pure settings (though I sincerely doubt this has anything to do with a singleplayer game), checking to make sure there are no spaces in your filename and it is indeed "vortigaunt_base.vtf" instead of "vortigaunt_base .vtf" and seeing if you have any custom models that use their own textures/filepaths.

What game are you reskinning in, and what directory are you placing these files.

And even though you said it:

Make sure you copy the vmt out of the GCF and place it into the user folder even though you don't change it!

That prevented it working for me once! :)

1. this is for HL2, not episodes, just the core game.

2. The files are called in order:

chefhat_sheet.VMT
chefhat_sheet.VTF (I assume these are for the hat you see them wearing in Black Mesa East.)
eyeball.VMT
eyeball.VTF (self explanitory)
glint.VMT (assuming it's for a shine)
pupil.VMT
pupil.VTF (again, self explanitory)
vortigaunt_normal.VTF
vortigaunt_sheet.VMT
vortigaunt_sheet.VTF (the rest of the model's skin.)

I've edited:

eyeball.VTF
pupil.VTF
Vortigaunt_sheet.VTF

Everythng else is from that directory. Not touched or changed in any way. Names are exactly the same.

So my folder in the diretory below looks like this:

chefhat_sheet.VMT
chefhat_sheet.VTF
eyeball.VMT
eyeball.VTF (Edited)
glint.VMT
pupil.VMT
pupil.VTF (Edited)
vortigaunt_normal.VTF
vortigaunt_sheet.VMT
vortigaunt_sheet.VTF (Edited)

Again, the directory i'm putting the edited files PLUS the old parts I haven't edited is:

Code: Select all
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\groxkiller585\half-life 2\hl2\materials\models\Vortigaunt

I just thought of something, I wonder if the format for the new VTF's is wrong, let me check...

EDIT: made no difference, they are still not appearing.

I don't know if you've already thought of this or not but... HL2 was recently (when the Mac support for Steam was launched) upgraded to the Source 2007 engine. So the materials in "source materials.gcf" are pretty much inconsistent at best when it comes to what is used where.

The Vortigaunt model was upgraded with Episode 2 to utilize phong as well as other features of the newer engine, so "vortigaunt_sheet.vtf" -- no matter how many times you edit it/check/double check it will not change the skin of the vortigaunt because it is using "vortigaunt_base.vtf"

Unless you're intentionally using the old model (no idea why you would), that's probably it.

I HAVE to use the old model , it's the only one I have! :? I don't have EP2 or EP1 so if the model was updated it doesn't effect me.

I'll rename it for the heck of it though. If the the GCF for source materials doesn't work then where's the content at? HL2 doesn't have anything in it....

EDIT: besides I also edited the eye and pupil, if the sheet didn't work then THOSE should but they don't appear.

Does your in-game Vortigaunt look like: http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/File:Vort_Ep2.jpg or http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/File:Vo ... canals.jpg ?

Edit: It's "source 2007 shared materials.gcf"

That's odd, mine looks like the EP2 one but I don't have EP2.

Ok, loooking there...

Oh wow that was confusing but I found it. I'll see if edting these gets an effect.

EDIT: Nope I get nowhere. What is the exact directory? Is it case sensitive?

materials/Models/vortigaunt/vortigaunt_base

It shouldn't be case-sensitive.

in the HL2 directory right?

Mine looks like this:

.../Hl2/materials/models/vortigaunt/vortiguant_base

but the in-game model is still the orignal skin. :?

OH! I think I figured it out. I'm saving as version 7.2 when they are 7.3, that must be why. I'll fix it and tell you if it worked.

EDIT: Of course it doesn't work. Is there something else I could have messed up while resaving it?

decompile the model and double check the material names and locations

I would but cannonfodder's MDL decompiler is acting up. It keeps giving me an issue about "missing steamappid: 211"

I know how to fix this, go to source sdk's gameinfo.txt and change 211 to -211 or something similar, then run it.

The problem is that didn't work, it still gives the appid error when I try to decompile anything. ( I didn't start SDK in the process either)

Ok I figured out the problem: The changes occur in HL2 but NOT in Portal. The porblem is I need it to work in Portal.
