EP2 content in Source07 Mod

Postby Gary on Fri Feb 04, 2011 4:12 am

Okay, every time I try making my mod load EP2 content I end up with my mod crashing at start up. The codebase is Source 2007, I don't know if there is any coding needed to allow Ep2 content to work, this is why I am asking, I need to know how to make my mod load EP2 content.

As much as I hate to rely on another game for assets, EP2 just has what I need. And I can't just export the assets to my mod, it's just too much and wouldn't be practical.

Thanks guys.

AFAIK, you'll have to mount the content package by adding it to the gameinfo.txt
A list of all available AppID's can be found here: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki ... cation_IDs

I guess you know that every mod using the EP2 content can only be played by ppl who own that game too.
So if there are just a few models, IMO it's not worth mounting the EP2 content and reduce the possible ammount of players that much.

I've tried the appid thing before, that caused the game to crash.I'll try it again invade I just happen to do it wrong that time.

And I know it would require players to have ep2, I hate to do it, but it's not practical for me to upload the amount of needed assets.

Adding "|all_source_engine_paths|" also means custom content found in EP2's folders will appear in hammer, just "ep2" will mount the GCF only.

That magical thing always works :o

Exept with Portal, but the reasons are obvious and it's only the code bit.

Also in an update, mind figuring out how exactly to make commentary nodes? I can add them but no matter what I do the text won't appear as subtitles.

Code: Select all
"GameInfo"
{
   gamelogo 1
   game       "shadow_map_fix"
   title       ""
   title2      ""

   type      singleplayer_only

   FileSystem
   {
      SteamAppId            420       // GCF for Episode 2
      ToolsAppId            211      // Tools will load this (ie: source SDK caches) to get things like materials\debug, materials\editor, etc.

      SearchPaths
      {
         Game            |gameinfo_path|.
         Game            |all_source_engine_paths|ep2
         Game            |all_source_engine_paths|hl2
      }
   }
}

= Crash, the game pops up, you can see the menu image come up then it closes.

Try copying the lines from EP2's gameinfo.txt.

Code: Select all
      SteamAppId            218
      ToolsAppId            211      // Tools will load this (ie: source SDK caches) to get things like materials\debug, materials\editor, etc.
      AdditionalContentId      420    // GCF for Episode 2

I got the engine to work with EP2 content, but sadly the tools don't understand AdditionalContentId...

Bug:The engine understands this command, but the SDK tools unfortunately do not. The best solution, currently, is to copy the content of the game to a location on your hard drive and add an absolute SearchPath to it (see below). Remember to delete the SearchPath before you release.

From what I can tell, it is impossible at this time to have the same engine/mod and SDK load EP2 content. That's kinda sad...

This is the config that allows the mod to load the Ep2 content... but there is no way to make Hammer load EP2 content without some work around... ugh.

Code: Select all
"GameInfo"
{
   gamelogo 1
   game       "shadow_map_fix"
   title       ""
   title2      ""

   type      singleplayer_only

   FileSystem
   {
      SteamAppId            218
      ToolsAppId            211      // Tools will load this (ie: source SDK caches) to get things like materials\debug, materials\editor, etc.
      AdditionalContentId      420    // GCF for Episode 2

      SearchPaths
      {
         Game            |gameinfo_path|.
         Game            ep2
         Game            hl2
      }
   }
}

Thanks guys, I guess I'll have to use one of the work around, so I can farther slow the mapping progress.

So, your mod base can mount EP2 content and allow the content to be seen in Hammer without the work around? And it's on the Src07 codebase?
