Posing Ragdolls

Postby tron00 on Tue Feb 08, 2011 12:25 am

I'm working on a L4D level with a bunch of stores. I'd like to have some posed mannequins. I've been playing with ragdolls and I'm happy with the results. I imported the SMDs into 3DS Max, posed them, exported and compiled. I stripped the QC down to just what I think is the miniumum. I don't care about them being ragdolls anymore. I'd like a static prop for far away, unreachable areas, and a physics model that I can shoot and knock over. It works, but I'm wondering if there's anything I need to watch out for that would be bad for performance?

Code: Select all
$cd "C:\L4D_Projects\New_Models\Decompiled"
$modelname "Custom_Models\Hannah\Hannah.mdl"
$model "hannah" "hannah.smd"
$staticprop
$cdmaterials "models\Custom_Models\Hannah\"
$hboxset "cstrike"
$surfaceprop "plastic"
$eyeposition -0.000 -0.000 150.000
$keyvalues  { prop_data { "base" "Plastic.Medium"  } }
$illumposition -0.305 -0.019 37.327
$sequence idle "ragdoll" fps 1.00

$collisionmodel "phymodel.smd" {

   $concave
   $mass 10.0
   $inertia 5.00
   $damping 0.05
   $rotdamping 5.00
}

Thanks! Just so we're clear, I didn't make that model. I just decompiled and posed it. I also used the Fisherman from Lost Coast and made a statue out of him. I used photoshop and made his skin look like metal and posed him. I used a LOD version of him and got it down to 5k polys, down from 11k. It's now a static model, since I don't need a statue to move.

I know you guys pose stuff all the time in Gmod and maybe others easily, but in L4D there's no way to do this. I'd love for someone to give me some thoughts on this. Either bless it, or condemn it. I have a high-end system so I can't tell if performance is going to be a problem for some people. And, I haven't had my first release yet so I'm sure there's plenty of stuff I don't know. Thanks.

There shouldn't be any performance problems at all if you use a prop_static.
