Multi player: Custom content

Postby Zenn on Sun Mar 20, 2011 2:33 pm

In the case, you wanna play a custom map with custom content (new textures, models, etc.) in a multi player game: Do the other players also need to have this map and it's contents already downloaded and installed for being able to play it with me? Or will all the stuff being downloaded automatically from my computer, if others join the match?

I am talking about HL2:DM and Source Mods

You need to pack it into the bsp using pakrat or other similair software.

And then, everything will be downloaded automatically, if someone connects to my server or do I need to ditribute the bsp first?

Once someone connects to your server the server will start uploading your map to that person if they don't already have it which means that everything will be downloaded automatically if you have packed all your custom content into the bsp.

What Cheese said.

The "modern way" for most Source-engine games is to pack the custom files into the BSP, which makes the BSP file bigger. Most servers are set up so that the BSP file is automatically downloaded to clients if they don't already have another of the same name.
