Creating realistic/custom detail props?

Postby Kubata on Fri Aug 12, 2011 11:33 pm

Hey there, currently in the planning/testing stages for a new map and I came across this:

which I immediately recognized as Briscoe's work, the guy who made de_forest and has this engine down pat. So anyway, I realized the potential for detail sprites and I looked through the tutorials on here, I've already run into two problems that I can't seem to solve.

1. I've seen blend textures where detail sprites are heavily concentrated when one texture is present and fade when the other is. In other words, the sprites only appear when a grassy/dirt texture is blended into the displacement but are less present (or not at all) when a rock or concrete texture is blended. How is this done? Is another group added to the detail.vbsp?

2. Briscoe (and other original mappers) use custom detail sprites pretty much from scratch - I know the detail material is defined in the map properties but every custom one I've used doesn't work. Are there special lines or code, parameters, anything note worthy that needs to be checked for custom detail material to even work? Are there any useful tutorials on producing clean custom detail materials?

Well, shit. I couldn't find this anywhere, and it ends up being a tutorial right here on interlopers. I appreciate it, I was expecting this to be waaay harder than that.

Just in case anybody happens across this thread looking for some tips:

Tremendously useful.

Running into an issue. Went through the tutorial and even through the comments and can't find anything I've done wrong - basically the sprites are being created right under the surface of the displacement.

Here's the detail part:

Code: Select all
wsmrdetail

   {
      density 500

      Group1
      {
         alpha 0
      }

      Group2
      {
         alpha 1

         Shrub1
         {
            sprite "0 0 128 205 512"
            spritesize "0.5 1 16 32"
            spriterandomscale .2
            spriteorentation 2
            amount .1
            sway 0
            maxangle 95
         }
         Shrub2

Post a reply in the actual tutorials thread, you might be better off getting an answer. Look through the comments of the tutorial :D

Thanks, I looked through the comments and couldnt find a solution (the coordinates detailed in the detail.vbsp are fine).

From my experience, I've never gotten them to work completely right.
