MDLCompiler Error - unknown model option -generic command he

Postby JVanover on Sun Mar 18, 2012 8:45 am

Okay, I've Googled, searched, and I still can't find anything on my problem.

Here's the log from the .qc:

qdir: "g:\0-mdl\v92\v92_jacket\"
gamedir: "c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\mrjanedoe\garrysmod\garrysmod\"
g_path: "G:\0-mdl\v92\v92_jacket\v92.qc"
Building binary model files...
Working on "v92.qc"
SMD MODEL G:\0-mdl\v92\v92_jacket/mesh.smd
ERROR: g:\0-mdl\v92\v92_jacket\v92.qc(4): - unknown model option "$bodygroup"
ERROR: Aborted Processing on 'jessev92/v92_jacket01.mdl'

Commenting out the bodygroup lines gives this:

qdir: "g:\0-mdl\v92\v92_jacket\"
gamedir: "c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\mrjanedoe\garrysmod\garrysmod\"
g_path: "G:\0-mdl\v92\v92_jacket\v92.qc"

ERROR: g:\0-mdl\v92\v92_jacket\v92.qc(285): - unknown model option "$texturegroup"

Commenting out the texture groups gives this:

qdir: "g:\0-mdl\v92\v92_jacket\"
gamedir: "c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\mrjanedoe\garrysmod\garrysmod\"
g_path: "G:\0-mdl\v92\v92_jacket\v92.qc"

ERROR: Aborted Processing on 'jessev92/v92_jacket01.mdl'

Commenting out materials gives this:

qdir: "g:\0-mdl\v92\v92_jacket\"
gamedir: "c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\mrjanedoe\garrysmod\garrysmod\"
g_path: "v92"
Working on "v92.qc"
SMD MODEL G:\0-mdl\v92\v92_jacket/mesh.smd
ERROR: g:\0-mdl\v92\v92_jacket\v92.qc(427): - unknown model option "$hboxset"
ERROR: Aborted Processing on 'jessev92/v92_jacket01.mdl'

Here's what I do know:
- It's something to do with this specific model, because any of my other .qc files compile just fine without issues, so I know it's not the bin files or the game settings.
- It's not registering the basic compile commands in this file

Anyone know what's wrong with my model?

Well you haven't put your bodygroup filenames in quotation marks ("trilby.smd" etc), yet almost every other filename is. I know with vmts quotation marks can be optional but I think it's an all or nothing. Note that quotation marks are used here: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/$bodygroup

Also is 'blank' an option?

I'm assuming it isn't a problem with the hyphen in your folder structure (0-mdl) as you said other models compiled fine?

Another idea - could be the cd line throwing up a problem if it's not finding the folder. If your qc and smds are in the same folder, just delete the whole line, afaik you don't need it. Having looked at some of my qcs now I haven't used it.

There's nothing wrong with any of the names, because it's worked for years like that.
Blank is the option you use to have the group disabled by default.
No other model I've had has needed quotes around the parts, so I doubt it's that.
The materials folder doesn't have to be there for it to compile. I always do the textures last because they take more time. This is the first model in 3+ years that has done this.
Commenting out the $cdmaterials gives this:

qdir: "g:\0-mdl\v92\v92_jacket\"
gamedir: "c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\mrjanedoe\garrysmod\garrysmod\"
g_path: "v92"
Working on "v92.qc"
SMD MODEL G:\0-mdl\v92\v92_jacket/mesh.smd
ERROR: g:\0-mdl\v92\v92_jacket\v92.qc(427): - unknown model option "$hboxset"
ERROR: Aborted Processing on 'jessev92/v92_jacket01.mdl'

Something is wrong with this model, because I've re-written the .qc from scratch twice. I'm more interested in finding out what causes this error over fixing it at this point.

I didn't say delete $cdmaterials I said delete $cd

If the compiler is having such a basic problem it's probably because there's a problem reading the smd. Therefore it's either not finding the smd (so try deleting/changing the $cd line that points to it) or your mesh.smd (the last thing it reads before it throws up errors) is corrupt. Maybe it was accidentally exported as an animation smd, maybe there's a bigger problem with your model that causes a corrupt smd, I don't know. But it's the most likely explanation.

I'll try again tomorrow, it's 0400 now. I'll re-export and see if that fixes these shenanigans.

Possibly some SDK update changed the behaviour, or it's a problem with the compiler, or the VDC wiki is incorrect. Whatever the case, you can NOT use "blank" as a bodygroup or else it causes an error exception. The only way I found around this is using an empty smd with no info instead of "blank."

Blank works. I've been using it for over 3 years now like that.

I've come to the conslusion it's the mesh, because every other model, even the one I decompiled to look at was able to work, so it's not an update either.
