Maya 2012 smd exporter - no gemoetry in reference.smd

Postby cool_smek on Mon Jul 02, 2012 7:47 am

Hi guys,

I'm pretty stuck here, I'm working in Maya 2012 with the Pralls smd exporter. What I'm trying to do is get a reference.smd file to be exported correctly but every time I export, the geometry is missing and it is instead replaced with a single joint or null object with the same name as my original geometry.

I'm not sure if there is something wrong with the smd exporter or if I'm just not setting something up correctly.

I've followed this tutorial but I cannot seem to get a good export. :(

Anybody else having this issue? Any solutions?

author of the tutorial here :P

My first guess would be that you didn't follow step 2.4 precisely, happens quite often for some reason (maybe its not well explained and my fault)

However, have a look at this

Did you add the shape node to the reference layer aswell, as explained here? Its really important for the exporter

Hi, thanks for making that tutorial, its very well explained!

I do have the shape node added to the reference layer, but I still come up with a bad reference file with no geometry.

I should be able to import the smd back to maya and have the same geometry right? Is that something that has been done before?

glad you found my tutorial helpful, even though it doesnt work so far ;)

for your question: yep, thats right. if you import the smd back into maya, the mesh would be imported triangulated.

I don't really have another idea atm what's wrong, if you set the project (so the reference.smd ends up in the right place) and correctly and followed all steps.

One possible workaround could be that you create a layer called "physics" and add the mesh + shape there, then check "expot physics from layer "physics"" in the export settings, maybe that will work atleast. IIRC it exports the same .smd as it would in "reference"

If that neither works for you, I fear the last possible solution could be to reinstall Maya or I could try to help you via teamviewer? :?

Ok, I finally got the geometry back into maya.

I followed your tutorial to a tee this time and it worked so that's good news. :)

I think now, I'll have to narrow it down to what was different that made it work so I can continue to export models from maya. I have a feeling it had something to do with the physics layer portion of the exporter, but I'll have to see.

Thanks for your help, I'll come back to this thread if I run into anymore hitches with the exporter!

One new hitch I seem to be running into is that when I compile my model, the texture will not link up with the vtf and vmt I have in the materials folder. It's like the model doesn't know what texture to look for. In HLMV it says "Model attempted to load one or more VMTs it can't find"

Ah, disregard that last post. I wasn't putting the .tga files in the maya project folder called materialsrc to input the folder order for the vmt once compiled. -_-

Starting to get the hang of this though!
