Shadow/shading problem on static prop model

Postby Shadow801 on Wed Jan 02, 2013 1:25 pm

Hi all,

Having a strange problem with one of my models, it does not appear to be lighting correctly with the flashlight. (Will try it with a lightmap soon).

It lights in strange ways at different angles. If I stand on the other side it lights correctly and if I stand half way only half of the model will be lit. At first I thought it was because the collision model was wrong, but now that is correct but it is still doing it.

This is the one with the issue ^

Any ideas? All help appreciated! :)

Sorry for the noob questions, just trying to enhance my levels with models so this is a first for me.

hey,

Did you properly unwrap your model ? I don't know if it uses your model uv's for the lighting but if it does that might be the problem.

I did, as far as I know it's all unwrapped correctly however I will post a picture of my unwrap in 3Ds to check once home tonight. But I don't think that should affect it, somebody suggested that I have inverted polygons but I have checked that as well and I don't believe I do.

I've had some weird issues like this before, And it was usually on models I have flipped or mirrored in Max. I think it may be something to do with the normals, Try adding a 'Normals' modifier (if you are using max) and then flip them. Or try resetting the Xform.

I might be talking out of my bottom here, but its something to try.

That could very well be the case. I use the symmetry modifier in many cases which flips the model. I think I am going to scrap this model (as it's terrible), but now I know for the future what causes it how to avoid it and what I could do if it comes up again. Thanks for your help! :)

You don't really even need to apply a Normals modifier in Max. You can just flip the normals yourself while in the polygon sub-edit mode. It's basically the same process with the exact same result, but it allows you to not add another modifier to the stack. It's good if you tend to be OCD about that kind of shit, like me. :-D
