CS:GO Detail Sprites

Postby Tanuki on Mon Jan 14, 2013 5:35 am

Has anyone tried to make maps with detail sprites in CS:GO?

I was able to make a detail.vbsp and they are appearing in game.

The problem is that some are colored incorrectly with very dark sprites in shadows. Also sometimes they are colored bright green and red.

I was looking around and this guy has the same issue:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2704295

Someone refers to this as being "officially bugged" but I dont consider a single post anywhere near official and I havent found any other instances of this problem.

Ive tried removing the latest lighting entities such as env_cascade_light and light_directional but it didnt help.

Thoughts?

Could be the compression type of the vtf? Maybe there is another shader you should be using int the vmt? I don' know how source particles work but your best bet is to have a look at the ones that are already working in game.

Hey,

You could export the parts that need grass to a 3d modeling app. Place the grass and export it as model.
just a thought *or how I would do it*.

good luck.

Personally I see it as issue regarding the lighting system to Source over sprites themselves. I have seen this issue back before the engine CS:GO uses in detail sprites generated over displacements. I much prefer using models for foliage now since they can have their lighting tweaked and adjusted to avoid the problem you refer to. To be honest I think the core of the problem is the way the sprite shader corresponds to the lighting passes, which would also present a much greater task in fixing them. So my best advice is to use models in areas with limited light exposure and use the sprites on open terrain (like fields and such) where they are bound to receive all the direct light they need.

ive narrowed down the problem to the $vertexcolor command in the vmt of the sprites cards. Turns out people are having trouble with this for particle coloring too
