Creating a Skybox from a panoramic image?

Postby remer on Mon Jul 08, 2013 7:40 pm

This is the image in question - http://i.imgur.com/fWRqByQ.jpg

What I'm trying to ask is how do I take that image and make it into a cross-box? How do I do it accurately so that it doesn't look like I'm standing in a giant painted cube as well?

I am not entirely sure how to go from a panoramic image to a crossbox, I am sure the pro's like Mr.chop (colter nowadays?) could help you with it.

But I made a skydome for use in 3D skyboxes some time ago. I took the time to slap your example sky onto it, feel free to use it.

I also added instructions on how to make other skies work with it.

It's probably far from ideal, since by using this method the normal skybox is also rendered (altho it doesn't show ingame)

edit: this might be what you're looking for. http://www.cgtextures.com/content.php?a ... e=cubemaps

This guy also has some nice skyboxes available https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/377 ... st_v2.html

I reckon you're better off using a dome for that image. Converting it into a cross would force you to lose a lot of information and quality.

Thanks, guys. I'll definitely try the dome thing. I appreciate your help!

What I've been doing lately involves 3DSMax, which is free if you're a student or happen to be some sort of swashbuckling gentleman.

Take a truly massive skydome (build one yourself), drag and drop your texture on (no cubemap nonsense, just a straight sheet) and make your tweaks.

Then install WallWorm SkyWriter, read the documentation, get it installed and voila. It works a charm when you get round the occasionally finicky issues it has (i.e. HDR/LDR rendering should be 1.0 by default, but w/e).

Why skywriter? Because it does a far better job than Vue or Terragen or whatever else ever has done, and skips the bullshit with cubing it. You get a sky that looks like a damn sky rather than a weird box thing trying to be a sky.
