The golden chess set

Postby Deadman on Fri Aug 19, 2005 1:28 am

been working on this for a while now and I thought I'd show some WIP

the texture on the board isn't final, so that's going to be changed

the main thing I want comments on atm are the pieces and their texture (the set's going 2 be gold and silver

Maybe it's just the perspective, but the top of those towers look a bit crooked.

Nice job though! Learning to model myself, it's not easy. Respect. ;)

this isn't going to be a model to be used in HL2 or CSS this just an art project

I'll get into modeling for games when I get some more experience

Is this going to be used as some sort of model in game? If so, it looks very detailed for something that should be a small object. Though i dont know much about modeling, but dontya think that will be a problem? i mean, the amount of polys in that small of an object? Maybe im just not a modeler...

It's really is good. Well done. Things like this help you learn so much. The next project you move onto after this you'l be surprised at the results. Keep going and learning you're making good progress.

If you want a good chess board texture i recently made one which i don't mind sharing.

It's good. I recommend some more work on the lighting/reflective textures if it's for an art project. Use advanced lighting and spend ages tweaking the reflection options.

Also, some mild, small-scale noise in the texture colour/bump-map may help, but again it needs to be reeeealy subtle.

as you wish sir :P

another "small" update I've got the shaders pretty much done now, apart from the border one (it's the same on that's on the pieces but it just doesn't look right :?), I know that the rooks need 2 be subsurfed a bit more, only noticed that after the render was done, I'm now going to focus on creating the rest of the pieces. and making a better texture for the board itself

render time +/- 3 mins
