Two questions :)

Postby Rick_D on Fri Nov 18, 2005 8:12 pm

Normal maps, and models. Is there any reason mine aren't showing up? Any tutorials you can suggest specific to getting normals onto models, or anything that would help me?

The other thing is physics models: I have an old model that was compiled as physics and works perfectly, it even gibs, but now no physics models will work, they appear invisible, but compiled as a prop_static they work. Has there been an update that I'm not aware of? Any tutorials?

Thanks for your help.

Check you have a DirectX8.0+ compatible GPU, otherwise normal maps wont show.

The problem is getting them to show (it's not a software prob, the maps work for maps etc, just not on models), soa specific tutorial would be great.

1) post your VMT here for the material problem

2) Turn on 'developer 1' in console, reload the map with the dodgy physics props, see if you get any messages. It might be because you have propdata/surfaceprop problems in the .qc, developer mode should tell you

Code: Select all
"VertexLitGeneric"
{
   "$baseTexture" "models/<removed>/trunk"
   "$bumpmap"   "models/<removed>/trunk_normal"

   "$model" 1
   "$surfaceprop" "wood"

}

I'll try the dev mode. Thanks ;)

VMT looks fine, i think...How are you making the VTF? Using the NVidia normalmap plugin?perhaps you're using the wrong internal VTF format? (I reccomend nem's VTF plugin if you use photoshop, allows full VTF format choice easily)....although I've never had problems with wrong formats before. If you're using old-skool TGA2VTF out of the SDK, i think there might be a command line switch for normal maps.

I use the nvidia plugin, and I can get some great normals for world textures - they just don't work in game on models, perhaps I am fucking up the compile somewhere (explaining both the normal and phys problem).

Which tutorials did you guys use to familiarise yourselves with Source's new modelling requirements?

Well you obviously didn't just open Photoshop one day and decide to invent normal maps so you must have had some sort of a reference.

i learnt off the source wiki, interlopers tutorials and trial and error.

Did you try in dev mode and see if you get any warnings? what do the models look like in Modelviewer? post your QC up here, too, might be something wrong in there.

Hehe - thanks but it's not that. When compiled as a prop_static it works fine, compiled as a prop_phys it doesn't.
