Valve grabs DirectX11 :O

Postby BubbleQ on Mon Apr 18, 2011 7:40 pm

I just read some of the DriectX11 info, while I was downloading the latest drivers, and something did caught my eye, A LOT! :-D

With DirectX 11, tessellation and displacement mapping finally come together in a happy union, and already, developers on jumping on board. Popular games like Alien vs. Predator and Metro 2033 use tessellation to produce smooth-looking models, and developers at Valve and id Software have done promising work on applying these techniques to their existing game characters.

Personaly I think that tesselation can, if used correctly, turn up atomsphere and bring very much depth to games. Especially in singleplayer of course. But I can´t wait to se how Valve takes use of such thing, the result can only be epic^^
But do you think Portal 2 will include tesselation, or any Dx 11 for that matters?

Another cool thing is, it can be used on animated meshes.

Yeah I just remembered when I was talking about Valve using this I said it was one of the reasons we have not seen Ep3 yet. Now it looks like I could have been on the right track... There is no doubt something has been holding them back with releasing Ep3 and with each episode the engine has taken a step forward. It stands to reason this could be the step forward for Ep3...

I can tell you now it's not gonna be in Portal 2, from all the videos it looks like a slight improvement upon either the EP2 or L4D/2 version of Source.

Oh Valve you sneaky little you! Tessellation has some potential and it really raises up the bar on details when used right, just see unigine benchmark and you get a little taste of what's in store.

Metro 2033 does use tessellation and it really does a phenomenal job on their monsters with all their horrifying details popping out, but it can also make some things look freaky in characters like making hands bloaty. But they don't use it on the level geometry though.

Can't say if we see tessellation used in portal 2, maybe.

It was asked if Portal 2 would use DX11 a few months ago on the steam forums. The answer is no. Most likely Episode three.
