Revelations 2012 - A Dark Artz Disaster

Postby Hollow on Wed Apr 25, 2012 1:19 am

Now I shouldn't even be giving this press because it doesn't really deserve any, but this is Source Engine based, and myself, ad_hominem (Joe) & Skoften (Sander) managed to play through with some review copies Joe received from the Devs.

Yeah, it's on steam to buy..SERIOUSLY:

Hello reviewing website no one has ever heard of, with your lovely review!

This just looks like my beloved N64 games!

I'll let Joe compile his review, so I won't be doing a proper one myself. But where to start...

First things first, AVOID THIS GAME LIKE THE PLAGUE.
If you were thinking to yourself 'hey this looks like L4D!' No, it IS L4D, it's a horrbily reskinned L4D clone, with possibly the worst art I've ever seen in an indie game....I can't even make my brain try and conjure up something this nightmarish. There are freaking palm trees, next to cactuses, in the middle of a rainforest. FUCK LOGIC.

The intro credits were like some sort of bad powerpoint presentation explaining completely irrelevant mumbo-jumbo about the Mayans and Gods, literally, you do not need to know nor care about the shitty filler of 'backstory' provided.
The game grants you the ability to wield some funky arm attachment that you run round spamming Mouse 1, killing any (supposedly) demonic indigenous people. You have to collect crystal skulls or some shit, but it was confusing as hell. It's dark, ugly and for some reason you eat their hearts...LOL OK.

It has an asking price of £11.99, and this is with a 20% discount people, I hear the only reason it's managed to get licensed distribution is because the guy who started the company is stupidly rich and rounded up some lackluster talent to make this abomination. It sometimes barely even tries to hide it's L4D, the loading screens, the revive a teammate icons, everything! GRATE SUCCESS

Check this other video review to see what I mean:

It's pretty upsetting when this can get released, and there are HEAPS of mods that are original and look great. And yeah, maybe I shouldn't be so sour because I was able to play a free copy, but we took a bullet playing through this, so you guys wouldn't ever have to!

Soundbites from your very own interlopers' members!:

"I feel like filing a lawsuit against them" - Melvin
"I've only seen pictures and read a review and I was ready to puke blood" - Plague

So yeah, discuss :)

floating bots

incredibly retarded boss sequence

If I really do have to say something good about this game then its the particles and effects. They look decent, alltough totally misplaced and overused.

How did they manage to get a commercial Source license when it is so obviously a rip off of a Valve game?

That has to be the most depressing, overly used fuck cluster of particles i've ever seen. Not to mention how hediously shitty they are. This is a shame to me. -_-

Ok, a bit of an update. I bothered to look a little deeper and the team is mainly a family business, all of them had previous jobs in completely unrelated fields, apart from Doug Hoogland, who is apparently TopHatWaffle?! (0_o)

The team bio page is cringeworthy....

Pretty much explains everything to be honest!

I think if this had been released as a mod for L4D it would have been 'somewhat successful'
