dude, I always wanted to make textures from scratch too, but using photo overlays adds so much to the texture

just keep making the base from scratch like you are doing now, and use photos to your advantage to add detail

But I wanna be able to make the enitre thing from scratch. Which reminds me I have to look up a tutorial on how to make realistic metallic scratches.

I have to admit your does look better...

Though I don't like how the dirt line at the top covers the rust, though that's probably just me being mad my hard work is getting covered. :P

It's not that hard to make what you made. It's just like rendering fibers then putting color overlays.

Here's my attempt at masking a photo over the texture:

I used a metal texture as the base, then just a layer of gray to brighten it up. After that I used a layer of clouds and a layer of noise. To finish it off i used two different layers of grunge. And for the rust I had to use another two layers of grunge with some extra color filters to get it to look right. All done in less then 15 mins. Hope this helps you a bit in understanding how to overlay a picture in order to make metal textures.

And sourcemaps, how did you get his rust to look so glossy in your overlay?

Looking better, you're on your way!

Only thing is the rest of the metal maybe shouldn't be orangey, it would bring out that actual rusted bits a lot more. Are you using photoshop? if so which layer setting are you using?

Rust corrodes the metal itself, changing not only the colour but the surface texture of the metal. It makes it more bumpy, pitting the smooth surface of the metal. The areas of rust on the texture need to be more clearly defined, the metal also needs more definition, those larger scratches and dents should stand out more than the vertical stripes layer.

I'm using paint.net, but I have GIMP.

I added the orange tint as a layer because without it the rust stood out way too much - more so than regular rust.

I admit it needs alot of work, I'll see about making the larger dents more pronounced. And removing the orange tint.

EDIT: New version:

-removed orange tint

-bumps should be more pronounced in certain areas than others

I wonder if the CS5 content aware fill technology could be used to make seamless texture automatically. I'm willing to bet that it could.
