character design study

Postby jister on Fri Feb 04, 2011 9:54 pm

hey I was posting some work in the model pimpage. but I'd like some more in-depth comments on this so i decided to start a separate thread.
anyway I'm developing some characters based around a band to do some animations, maybe even a short or a game if all works out.
so starting with design info for the characters:
the band is called the rott childs, after the famous rothschild family. believed by some to rule the world through an enormous fortune they have build up through a century or 2.
anyway so it should have a dark and doomy undertone. but also funny and cartoony.
this what they look like in real life

my first idea is going for a sober over-styled kind of look.
here are some of the first i did, i'll also post screens of things i won't be using in the vid but still think is relevant to developing the style I'm after.

the nikked one:

NEWER VERSION

redheaded one:
this is still a very first attempt, planning on reworking him like the other one

the nasty looking one:

other style tests, not characters for this project

hope this will turn out to be an interesting thread from characters artists.

...last guy looks like he's eaten a brick. Jawbone shape also looks completely off from side-on

thx Source, darn i should finish the burning man's body...
don't post him here cause this is a specified thread where i'll be searching for the right style to fit this band.
talking about that, i believe i'm on the wrong track here.
gonna start over and look for a different art/cartoon style that's creepy and dark.
any suggestion or examples?
maybe more in this direction:

A Christmas Carol, the one with Jim Carey a must see for modellers imo ;)

and yes it gives more punch to creepiness because is has this vial of real over it.

This reminds me of Hector Hammond from the Green Lantern comics.
