Intuos's are basically amazing, I have an A4 size Intuos3 at home but I honestly find it too big, I would prefer one of the A5 ones I think. Some of the cheaper Wacom's are pretty good too, I wouldnt use another brand if I had any choice.

I've only heard good things about wacom tablets, and I personally own an older bamboo fun. I think it's exactly the right size.

I own an older Wacom "BAMBOO" (MTE-450) tablet and its perfect for me (i wish i had a larger (deeper) desk tho), but right now it's perfect. They don't sell them anymore, but cost me something like 80€/100$ 3 years ago :3

I own a Bamboo Pen Small(CTL-460). It isn't very big but actually I don't need it very big (because you can always zoom the picture that you are drawing). I love the feeling of drawing using it, the texture of the surface is similar to the texture of a real paper. The most important is it is not very expensive :P

I have a wacom graphire 4 (it's got a 4x3 inch drawing space, about a5) It's great. I am really hoping to get my grubby fingers on an intuos though, they look fantastic. The tablet is awesome but it's not very accurate, simply because you are drawing on the tablet but looking at the screen, and your brain gets lost in translation. The intuos would remove that I think but they are soooooo expensive.

EDIT: I meant to say cintiq.

12x9 tablet, was $92 with shipping. Got it for my girlfriend, works *Flawlessly*, competes with any wacom for general usage (Wacom has more button though, but for the price....)

Well by general usage I meant graphics usage, as in corel painting, textures, sketching, vectors, etc. The general functions of a tablet.

I don't think any standard tablet competes with a touchscreen monitor, so whats the purpose of the cintiq comment? I've only tried the intuos tablets and bamboo thingys.

Sorry but cheap knock-offs cant compete with Wacoms. There's just no comparison - theres a good reason 90% of people you ask cant even name a competing manufacturer/brand.

I can't afford the wacom price tag as I'm sure other people can't who don't do this for a living. Personally I've used both extensively and found them to be equal in their performance. Whatever floats your boat.

If I could afford Wacom I'd buy a wacom, but I can't. For all the amateurs it will do fine.

$70 is about what most people pay for a good mouse.

Wacom Bamboo - $45 on Amazon.
Wacom Intuos3 6x8 - $200 on Amazon.

I have one of the large (12x18) Intuos3 tablets, I got it a couple of years ago second-hand for something like $180-200 so I dont think they are extortionately expensive at all. Tablets are not an impulse-buy item by any means.

I've used unbranded / non-Wacom tablets in the past and I personally found them horrible to use.
