Notebbok display

Postby Munxx on Sun Jul 31, 2011 8:17 pm

I wanna buy a notebook as a desktop replacement and need it for mapping and game art creation purposes.

But I read, that notebook displays in general do not suit for graphics design, because of cheap TN-Panels...

Are there no notebooks out there, that can handle the job? I don't wanna buy a separate monitor, because I want to work mobile!

Thanks for answers!

Why not just buy a laptop? Sure it's a bit bigger, but you can actually see what you're doing on the screen.

This.

Also, your going to have to buy an expensive gaming laptop to be able to do as much as a desktop. If money is not a problem, you should be able to find a laptop more powerful then most desktops.

Most monitors have (cheap) TN panels anyway, a decent IPS panel monitor costs around 300-400, so most people just buy the less expensive TN panel ones. I think the more expensive Asus/Sony/Dell/Apple laptops have decent-ish monitors in their laptops, best way to test it out is to see them IRL and test out the color range.

But, if you're going to buy a laptop/notebook/minipc/whatever,
make sure to get one of these:

Without it, my computer feels like it can melt gold. With it, it's pretty chill.

I have a HP i9000, I think that's the model, it's got a 15 inch monitor and a numpad. The numpad was the seller because I use blender and use the hell out of the numpad when I do. It cost me around $4000 about 4 years ago and it's still going strong. The screen is a tiny bit lighter and unsaturated that most desktop monitors but I really don't find it problematic. The battery lasts only an hour and a half because modelling, texturing and mapping is pretty intensive on your computer. I'd suggest that if you get one you get a really decent expensive one. The one I had before was a cheapo dell piece of crap that was nothing but a hassle. You're better off spending the money and getting something future proof!

I bought my laptop from a somewhat unknown CTO company, 2 years ago, for around 1200-1500 euros. It's a bit large, which isn't nice if you want to drag it around, however I can work on it for days without a problem, has a numpad and the screen resolution is 72 dpi(!) / 1440 × 900. Battery, 4-5 hours on power-save using word/etc. around 2 hours in 3ds max.

So going for top-notch shouldn't be the only option, I dare to say. Also, there isn't something which is future proof. Buying a 2K laptop every 2 years is a better investment than buying a 4K laptop every 4 years. :)

The cooling system of a notebook works by carrying hot air out of the case. Cooling the laptop from the buttom up isn't useful in any way.

Cool pads are just like taking placebos, that only help the companies to make more money!
