Edgeless document in Photoshop

Postby lloyd on Sat Dec 03, 2011 2:05 pm

Olah Interlopers!

I come asking for help! seeing as how this is a Game Art forum I think this is something people here would really benefit from having.

When creating Textures for games you use the offset feature to move the edges of a texture into the centre, with this you can make seamless textures. However one of the drawbacks is the back and forth you have to do just to make sure it all works. a lot of the time you'll have to merge layers then offset, tweak, offset, tweak some more etc

So the idea is to have the ability inside of Photoshop to paint over the edge and have this appear on the other side. while also being able to see what you're doing.
This is something you can do in Painter and Zbrush but not everybody uses / has them tools to be able to take work between.

Heres a mock-up of what I mean:

unfortunately this is not something we can add to Photoshop with plugins so the only way this could be implemented is if Adobe were to see people actually want this. so with that in mind I've posted this on the Adobe Photoshop Requests website.

This is something that came about over at Polycount but to reach a bigger scope of people I'm posting it here too.
I know some of you guys go between the two sites so hello!

I hope this is the right place to post this, also do you know any other Game art / mapping sites that would also be interested in this.
I have quadrangle polygon OCD. please excuse me.

This would be really nice. In a similar vein, loading a U/V and painting accross seams.

Not entirely on-topic but at least relevant. If you use Max there is a way to do edgeless painting with it's viewport canvas with a semi-Photoshop environment.

I own Photoshop but simply don't like leaving my comfort zone in Max when I can get away with it... and this is an example of how you can do just that.

For those who don't own Max... I'm assuming the same possibility exists in Blender or Maya.

PS. Merry Xmas Interlopers!

I'm really surprised that there isn't a way to do this with plugins or hacks... Then again, I don't know how much of PS is open for modification. I'll support this!

it's cool, but what we see in that video is basically Photoshop stripped down.. it's easier and better to do in PS because you can work in a non destructive manner

Well PS does have more graphic editing tools. But you can still do it in a non-destructive fashion since you can create/save/work with PSDs in the viewport canvas... not just bitmaps. So you can use layers, blend modes, masks, etc.

It's just an alternative method, though (that I personally use often). The biggest drawback is that if you're UVW tiles too much in the viewport... you'll get lag. And to use all the tools of PS, though, you'll of course need to use PS. :)
