SpeedTree Collision problems And.. (fixed)

Postby Jangalomph on Thu Jan 20, 2011 2:50 am

When i import custom trees into UDK none of them have collisions, and its very frustrating.

My second problem is when i get a certain distance away from the trees. leaves become squares and it just forms something like a sprite that isn't set to world space glow in source. Its really stupid. So is there a proper way to get my trees into UDK, so that they have collisions, and ones who's leaves work right. The video i saw by raven on youtube did a good job. But.. his method has errors.

For the Collision problems, you need to apply collision to the trees in speed tree, to do that while in speed tree, just click on tools and select the generate collision, then just play with the settings.

For the square problem in UDK, that’s the billboards switching over. You can turn that off in UDK, just go to the properties of the tree in the scene and click to turn off billboards.

That should do it.

Hope that helps

Speedtree is packaged in the UDK.

Google gave me "SpeedTree is found as a stand alone program in the binaries folder of your UDK install."

Speedtree editor and compiler are both packaged as tools within UDK. They are standalone tools (find them by going to start menu -> udk -> tools) but there is also a speed tree editor inside UnrealEd itself, although all you really use it for is to apply materials.

Glad you fixed your issues. I don't generate billboards when I compile because as you say they look pretty bad. So far I've not run into terribly serious performance issues despite this, and my map is pretty large.

I also have no collision, hadn't tackled that issue yet but its good to hear it's done in speedtree. I love that program.

I have a question - do you have to scale your trees up in the editor? When I use the size scalar of 1.0 for my tree in the speedtree editor, importing it to UDK makes it smaller than a tiny bush. I have to scale it up 10x in UDK for it to look right. I tried scaling it up 10x in the Speedtree editor and ran into crazy funky issues with wind effects / animation.

Scaling them up in UDK works fine, but do you know a way to avoid this?

Just use the normal scaling in udk. It will always start out small when imported. But it's really no biggy :D But yes Vilham, UDK has the actual editor. You can create any tree you can imagine :)
