R.I.O.T. Recon In Outbreak Territory - Recruiting Now

Postby Wrangler249 on Mon Aug 02, 2010 11:45 pm

Greetings fellow 'lopers.

I'm the co-leader of the team developing R.I.O.T.; I use the word 'team' in a very broad sense, as there's only two of us. We have struggled with development in the past, and have opted to restart completely. We can't do this alone, and so I would like to invite anybody who is interested to apply for the team.

We are aiming to create a survival horror mod, with elements of roleplaying mixed in to create a more diverse range of play. The mod is set in a psuedo present day scenario where there has been an 'outbreak' which is reanimating the corpses of the dead and has caused the collapse of society as we know it. The players are to be pitched against these zombies as members of the emergency services (police, SWAT, army, etc...), with a range of subclasses; each with their own pros and cons. Players will be able to earn experience points, advancing their characters through a levelling system and increasing their skills and abilities. Free will is granted for all players, meaning that they do not have to join a group or complete missions; if they want to be a lone survivor, then by all means they can be one.

You should try and get some media of any progress to get people interested, screenshots, a video, anything.
Would help you a lot.

Oh god, here we go again. Do not recruit unless you have some media to show. No one will want to join a mod they know nothing about.

Just going to get it out of the way now.

Nothing shown, no media, not even concept art, generic zombie mod, and sounded very desperate in the start of your post.

Now go make some content, anything, at least to show this is more than some random pipe dream by two loonies. This isn't facepunch, you want people to help out here, show us why we would want to.

Fair do's, wasn't sure of the score if we didn't have much to show.

All I've got are some screenshots of one of the safe zones, which I'm working on right now.

I can literally go and find ten threads identical to this.

Your mod is nothing special as yet. There is no content and no display that you even know if your concept is doable.

Big whoop. Some alright maps.

Now tell me about your code.

Some media is better than no media, that's all. At least you got something.
Try update OP with as much as you can.

Major Banter, I get what you're trying to say.

I don't have any coding experience, so I can't tell you about the code past that its written in c++ and is an absolute pain in the dick to write and compile.

What I was bringing to the table was an idea, and I wanted to see if it caught anyone's interest, and if they would be willing to bring it into creation. Admittedly I dropped the ball with media, but what the table fucking Christ do you want me to show you when we have very little to show?

Nothing, if you have little.

Look at Overwatch. It came out all guns blazing. What an entrance, and mid-development progress. Awesome.

This is the widely known "ideas guy" post. Some chap gets - quite often a really good - idea, and then wants to make a mod. However, this also breaks rule #2 of my personal holy grail of mods and mapping.

Never go beyond your own ability if you can't deliver.

This is an idea. That's cool. But slamming it out with a few shoddy pictures of a map? That's not going to spark interest. It's rapidly going to go downhill. You're already hacked off, and this is the beginning. It's the same old cycle that every young mod-maker does and it's a tired, done cliche.

My advice? Kill the thread and work on it privately. Field Zone - my mod - has been pulled out of the limelight while we reshuffle the team and reboot the whole concept. We don't intend to show anything until we've actually got the code base down and the full asset base.

I apologise if I sound harsh, but this is for your own good. You will hear nought but the same.

If you want to recruit, do it privately. Though I recommend working on a MP map for CSS or L4D2. Get your mapping, gameplay and texture work up to scratch.

I jumped into modding. And it went to ratshit. Learn from my mistake, and so many others.

That's all I have to say.

How am I supposed to recruit privately when I don't know anybody to recruit?

In the simplest of terms I was asking for help, and you have been for the most part unhelpful. You came in with your gigantic epenis flapping about, ready to cock-slap me and my idea into oblivion with the aid of your attitude towards would-be modders.

You make completely valid points, but you went about it in an extremely unencouraging fashion.

I'm uninterested in arguing the point.

It's valid, it stands and you can make amends easily. I am a critic and I find problems. I do not find solutions. You can handle that.

Am I elitist with my huge e-penis of raw honesty? Perhaps. I know some would agree, a fair amount wouldn't. Either way; makes no difference. I could have ripped you to shreds with angry words and being a general cunt. Instead I gave solid opinion backed up by experience. Is experience therefore an e-penis or is that just me being labelled as discouraging? Who knows, who cares.

Get intergrated with a community, get maps out of the door and get people interested via a back catalogue of stuff. You to be encouraged? You need the confidence to take on critical attacks and the belief that you can beat them with some epic content.

I've mapped for five years in Source. I'm still a complete noob at much of it. Arrogance is very different from honesty.

Good luck with this project.

If you need advice or actual help with map work - not this - feel free to PM me or add me on steam. ID is the same as here. I'm not a complete dick really.

Ugh, I'm just being stupid. I apologise for being a dick. You're speaking sense and I'm refusing to see it.

I admit that I bounced in here with higher hopes than I should have had. To be honest with you, I couldn't stick developing this with such a limited team because it requires so much input on so many levels. I was wrong to assume that people would jump at the idea, and it was extremely short-sighted of me to attempt to recruit people at this early stage.

Please disregard this thread.

don't think banter is being a cunt, threads like this happen way more then you think. so I say you delete THIS thread, THEN go to the under-construction thread, and create a dev blog post there, add your screenshots as you go along, now I would say you ALSO start on a second project, something small like a Single Player map (or enter a contest, that's how I build cred, I.E. http://www.planetphillip.com/posts/voic ... mpetition/). Then release that to the public... to put it into other words being a mapper/modder in the community is like having an EXP system, the more you get around the higher you "cred" goes and the more likely someone would like to help.

I would also recommend seeing the "map pimpage thread" and posting a screenshot or two there, get some C&C.

so get up, dust yourself off, and start over..

I'll start "ahem... welcome to interlopers."

EDIT: Damn, I am always one post too late...

Props to you dude for being mature, most people ragequit the forum and refuse to admit any mistake.
I livestream and do hardcore play-by-play analysis of my mapping.

The harsh world of modding...

Getting to know people in the modding community will help you a great deal when starting something, if you make friends you're going to be able to bounce ideas between them and see if it's anyway near doable, your friends may know someone who's good with whatever would be needed and so on. Spending time doing your own thing first, getting experience and such is a very important thing.
