I think that instead of making a new mod pick up an older mod that was never finished. OR even better than that act as a kind of a free lance group that helps a struggling mod for awhile and then move onto the next.

Help me with my mod idea. Lol

In reply to cheesemoo, that's not a bad idea, but this is supposed to be open source mod. Would we depend that the mods we help must release their source code/assets?

At least i think it did

So what's wrong with semi-copying a story? Besides Homefront is in-depth and it's mostly about survival and not shooting, i.e. go to the market and get food try not to get killed on the way there. :|

I only suggest that because there have been a couple of open-source Interloper projects and they have never panned out. Also a problem with my idea is that many mods will not want help, because many people are reluctant to release their material to strangers and they want to keep things secret.

Maybe an open-source mod could work, but really by open-source do we mean open development? Technically any mod that releases is "open" except for the code. Back to the point for this idea to work it must be focused. Very focused where it is narrowed down to a few simple ideas. An RPG/Racer/FPS/RTS/MMORPG mix will never work. Also the idea should be something new and actually interesting. None of that old tired shooter shit. As a community our biggest advantage over a big game development company is that we can take risks. We can fail and people won't lose their jobs.

Maybe a Portal mod? Portal doesn't involve much FPS shooting (or not in the normal sense) and it uses the 2009 engine, so I think it could work. I don't wanna use a VPK system becuase it doesn't support modding much (or at least it isn't as simple as telling the gameinfo.txt to look in THIS VPK as well as THIS VPK, it all tends to be in one omni-VPK, which is bad because then we need to copy all the HL2, Portal, CS:S, or whatever we use's files to a new VPK PLUS whatever we add to it AND it has to be below 1 GB or the VPK won't compile.)

L4D2 doesn't use L4D's VPK and thus has copied materials and takes up more space. GCF's are more optimized and flexible.

BTW is it just me or did they fix 2009 faceposer, for some reason it works now. Odd. :?

Maybe a survival game in Siberia, with little fps elements. You would have to hunt/eat/drink, keep yourself warm, make sure you don't drown/freeze etc. Aka survive.

That's an interesting idea. There is already survival game mode in Garry's Mod, but it is pretty shitty yet very popular. Maybe I just like the idea, because there hasn't been a good polar bear killing and seal clubbing simulator yet.

I like Delta's idea, but maybe it could be set in a place where survival games haven't been set before.

And we will call it Rapture.

And then release a sequel that happens before the events of the first game.

I think you mean "Kim Jong-il". But he is not even in the photo's. I think you got him mistaking for Mao. :smt023

ontopic: I don't think survival mods work in source.

Sorry to be the party-pooper, but seriously, this will never happen.

It's a great idea, and it'd be fantastic if it worked out, but this will never ever happen. We as a community could hardly work together enough to make a map together, and now we're talking about a mod? I have 100% doubts this could ever come to fruition.

At best, it'd be a bunch of peoples half-assed maps into a broken mod with missing materials and models and guns off FPSB, and would just be an over-sized pile of shit.

BUT IT'S FUN TO THINK ABOUT :D

I thought the house project came out looking pretty awesome.
