Divergence - Multiplayer Source Engine Mod

Postby Elffus on Fri Jan 21, 2011 4:57 pm

Hello all,

Divergence is a recently started multiplayer Source Engine modification.

The modification aims to propel the player into a post-apocalyptic vision of Earth in the year 2055. A genetically advanced human race finds itself at the hands of a sudden invasion of a terrifying alien race which soon becomes known as the Terranor. With a break down of communications, the military soon falls as the merciless aliens advance, leaving only the dead in their wake.

The fight for humanity’s survival has begun.

We have come up with several design documents. These clearly lay out the direction of the modification. However, our team is controlled with something we like to call ‘Creative Anarchy’. This means that ideas go through a feedback system before they are implemented, from both the whole staff and the general public. Ideas can come from anyone - not just from the staff. This also means that while we give a general direction and theme, artists can use their imagination to its full potential.

Currently, the Divergence team is looking for those who can take on the roles below. Please note that we are certainly accepting people who can fulfill multiple roles. We are definitely taking in casual members as staff, too, we do not require you to be full-time or similar as long as it is clear you are providing content to the modification.

  • Mappers - those who are efficient in Hammer and have examples of previous work.
  • Modellers - anyone that can make models for the Source engine based on designs created and approved by concept artists; examples of previous work will be required. Those who can both animate and model are highly welcomed.
  • Animators - those that can animated models created by modellers. No previous experience is required, though if you cannot deliver decent animations you will be removed from the team.
  • Composer - one who can create any of the following: sound tracks, background music, sound effect or ambient noises, examples must be provided.
  • Texture Artists - those that can create beautiful and stunning textures, must be skilled with a graphics package and providing screenshots of previous textures is a must.

If you wish to apply for one of the positions then please send an email to james@divergencemod.com detailing your name, age, experience and examples of work if asked - see descriptions of positions above.
Don’t forget that we’re also looking for community members so please do check out out our website at http://divergencemod.com and especially our forum at http://divergencemod.com/forum.

Thanks,
The Divergence Team

Could we see some media please? No one wants to join a mod that has nothing to show but ideas.

Sure thing, here's some concept art our current concept artist has drawn up for the Terranor.

You can check our blogs, but at the moment we've removed weapon reloading, gone through the team based system, and are working on the evolution and creation systems. Unfortunately we have no mapper, so there isn't much you can show through an in-game screenshot. :(

Even then we could only show you that weapons don't auto-reload and teams work; there isn't much to show. The idea of this thread is to encourage people to join while we are developing so that we don't end up with a prototype and have to wait for team members to join before we can continue.

So the only things you've done is some pretty basic coding changes? Isn't it just a bit too early to be trying to recruit people if all you have to show is a couple of lines of code? I'm not trying to sound harsh it's just that it isn't very appealing.

We don't want to finish coding, show everyone, then have to wait on slow responses before we have to re-write things to implement new models, maps, etc. We aimed to start putting up one or two recruitment threads up early so we can continually post progress and hopefully spark interest. If you don't want to join that's fine, I understand why, as we don't really have much to show. Hopefully some screenshots we start providing in the near future will be able to capture attention if the current information does not.

I think this whole "needs pics" attitude is annoying.

Why don't we just wait for these guys to work some more and maybe we'll find something we like about them/their mod?

But best of luck to ya guys, I'll be watching for sure.
Contact. The EU welcomes the pain free. That's emotional impact.
I actually think limitation is good for creativity. If we had an engine that could do everything, we would be in trouble. It gives us focus. ~~ Randy Lundeen
