BioShock in Source-looking for crew!

Postby The_Nihilanth on Sun Feb 27, 2011 12:59 am

Hi there! I'm planning to work on a Half-Life 2 mod that will reimagine the world of BioShock. Its temporary name is BioShock Redux: Source (Iwant the community to come up with a name for it--after all, you guys are the ones who'll be playing it!).

The entire plot of the game is based on the original pitch for BioShock, found here:

http://irrationalgames.com/insider/from-the-vault-may/
http://irrationalgames.com/insider/from-the-vault-june/

Now, I'm brand new to modding--Honestly, the most I'll be able to do is create the storyline and do a lot of concept art. The rest I'll need to ask the community for. Coders, mappers, modellers--and everything in between. If you're interested, tell me what you want to do. I'm open to any help and suggestions.

Also, as for media, I'll post some concept art soon. But for the time being, those two articles from Irrational Games should keep you entertained for a while. :D

Thanks in advance!

Seriously though check the other "Help Wanted" threads from other new mods and you will get the same responses soon enough.

What's the point of remaking a game on a worser engine? Honestly Bioshock is great why do we need a crappier remake in Source, you don't even have content. Without content no one is even going to think of joining. And if you're new to modding don't start with something this big, do a small mod. Also a 'story/idea/concept artist guy' is not a real team member anyone can lead a mod and write a story that's already written. I'm trying to help you. I'm not trying to be an asshole but this just isn't going to work unless you have some things already made. Concept art isn't needed if you're remaking a game.

I don't mind constructive criticism--In fact, I greatly appreciate your input. I admit that it was probably a stupid move on my part for announcing this without any real information about it. However, to answer youre concerns:

-I'm not aiming to completely revolutionize modding or creating something extraordinary. But there's a lot of people who, after reading the BioShock pitch, feel that it should be made into an entirely new game itself. Even if this mod doesn't come out to be amazing, at least it's better than nothing.

-I'm making it in Source for a couple of reasons: It's easy to use and I think that it's one of the most succesful modding programs developed.

-Actually, the story for the original BioShock pitch was barely realeased. Most of the pitch talks about gameplay and only mentions the plot about two times (not counting the quotes on the top of the pages). All that it really contains is that your character is sent to an island, fights monsters and cultists, and also changes his DNA. There's a ton of things that need working on.

-This doesn't take place in Rapture. In fact, it has barely ANYTHING to do with the final BioShock. Most of its relations are in gameplay.

 Why can't people actually use their imagination and come up with their own ideas instead of ripping of other games. We see this time and time again with mods and it pisses everyone off. Do yourself a favour and use you head, God gave it you for a reason! :x

I'm sure that some people won't like it. But i'm also sure that there's some people who will. I'm making this for the people who will appreciate the mod.

So why call it BioShock or relate to it in any way at all?

Because it is based entirely on the original pitch for the game. Your same argument can be said about BioShock Infinite. But it's still BioShock.

Perhaps, but my point is, why don't you just do something original? You can use ideas from BioShock, but come up with something of your own. You're the "ideas guy", I'm sure you can think of something!

I've already made the promise to myself that I would do this; I won't go against what I've said.

That's the problem with all new modders. We are trying to help you, just forget about it, you can't make a mod being an 'idea guy' learn how to use Hammer. I re-wrote my entire mod story in about 2-3 hours, it's not hard at all. You need to stop making an ass out of yourself, no one is going to work for you if you act like this.

How is stating that I don't want to go against my personal commitment "making an ass of [myself]"? Regardless, I will make this mod; HOWEVER, I am taking your advice and making a different mod first, based off of a short story I wrote in Jr. High for a contest that almost got published (the editor and I had several... disagreements), and I think it's about time I revisited that. Now, should I make a new thread for it or do you suggest that I continue from this one?

Also, thanks again for your suggestions.

Don't make a new thread. Stop trying to find people to do the hard work for you. Why not try to learn the skills to do it yourself? There are far too many "idea" guys.
