mod team

Postby Black_garuga on Thu May 19, 2011 7:35 pm

Hello, I am looking for some people to help make a mod with me. I have a basic idea on what the storyline will be and what the environments will be, but I will never be able to it alone.

I need someone that has had experience making re-skins for models and making models, someone that can create custom music and ambient sounds, a few mappers to help with all the NPC placement, scripting, level design etc, and someone that can easily create scripts if we need them.

The basic storyline is that you end up in a mineshaft, tied up and unable to move in a mining cart. 2 figures come up to you and explain why your there, after they are finished talking they kick the cart, sending down the mine shaft. You then have to make your way back up to the mine shaft and through an abandoned train station.
This mod shall be called: "abandoned" as you were kicked down a mine shaft and left to die. This is just a rough storyline idea, it can be changed at anytime as I haven't started anything so far.

If you are interested please send me a private message on the steam forums and an example of your work, so I know if you are the person I'm looking for, or you can reply to this post, but I would prefer a private message. you can also contact me on my steam account "supascott" :).

You've given us the story, but what makes it a game?

is this going to be an adventure-platformer?

Black_garuga, if you want to make a mod, you can start here, you can get tutorials here; and if you need help/want to show stuff you're working on, you can also make a thread somewhere here.

If you want anything to get done, you gotta do it yourself. And in this day-and-age and with your not-quite-so-stunning-nor-detailed 'story' you won't get any people doing all your work.

I will be contributing to the mod via level design thank you very much, and for the type of game it would be an action genre.
This is the first time I have requested help for a mod and on this forum, I think it would be more appropriate to be polite and ask questions instead of just criticize everything.

sorry, but you must understand that allot of people come on these forums with a vague idea and a request for help with nothing to show for it..

it would be better if you just forget the idea, made some small maps, show of your work in map pimp-age thread,
and if you become any good join a mod team instead of creating one :)

now you probably won't take this advice right away.. but you will eventually

Unfortunately source-maps is right. There are dozens of posts exactly like yours and most of them go nowhere, or they make a few pieces of art and then the team falls apart. I would suggest building as much as possible without help before asking for help. For example, there's zero reason to model a new weapon or create a new sound, just because you want the gun to look different for story purposes until the mod is almost done.

You don't need several mappers, especially to help with the things that you posted about. It's best if each mapper can do the scripting on their OWN level. It's not hard to place npc's either. Once you learn that stuff you can make a few levels and then maybe drum up some interest.

Also, even if you do get alot of people offering help, you should avoid having a large team. Having more than a couple people is generally unneccessary, will force you to spend more time managing than working, etc. etc. etc. The mods that fail most are the ones that take on many people and/or people that are 'unneccessary' in th early stages (like voice actors/sound artists) (not that these people don't contribute alot, but for modders its best not to focus on stuff like that early on).

I know i shouldn't have started this thread without any progress in development but, I wasn't to know, but now I have finished my first level but parts are missing as i need new voice clips for the storyline to allow the player to progress through the level. I have uploaded some screenshots at mod DB, http://www.moddb.com/members/black-garuga so, if any one of you are interested enough still to take a look, be my guest, let me know what you think...

Record your own voice clips or use the built in speech synth until your mod is nearly finished. Sound is usually the last thing to be done in a propper game.
That's what she said.
