Portal 2 Co-op Vehicle

Postby onyx on Sat Jun 04, 2011 1:39 pm

This would be a fun co-op mod I think. One player could drive the vehicle and the other could ride on the back (sorta like the Warthog in Halo) and create the portals as the driver maneuvers obstacles and ramps. The mechanics would be pretty fun, and it encourages cooperation. I'd love to brush off my modeling skills to work on designing the vehicle model that fits in the Portal universe. Im thinking something like a NASA Mars rover, but with more muscle. Anyone interested in developing such a mod?....You know, for Science!

Dunno if that's possible, coding wise.

It may be difficult, but I don't see why it would be impossible. Some of the major issues that I see:

- Would need a coder who knew source vehicle physics and coding.
- A working portal turret system would need to be fixed to the back of the rover/vehicle
- The portals would need to be widened to fit a vehicle with a little bit of wiggle room
- P-Body and Atlas would need new poses/animations to sit on the vehicle
- Combining vehicle physics and portal physics while balancing the learning curve and fun factor will be a challenge

Well, since nothing is possible coding wise... as there is no code.

You should be able to fake it though. Having Player1 wired into a game_ui along with a camera, or something. You can also parent the second player, as putting them into a vehicle would remove their ability to easily create portals.

You could also give player2 the one-portal gun and have the player1 use the vehicle to shoot the other one.

I might be able to put something together.

No, as no coder could mod Portal 2, as there is no code to modify.

Easy, though likely best to just parent the player.

There is a console command, though, I don't know how much it breaks the looks of the portals.

Sure, though but we could be using prop_dynamics to fake it. Otherwise, how would you tell the player's to use the animation?

Doubtful there is any vehicle physics in Portal 2's codebase, we would likely have to fake it with some Hammer hacks.

[Sarcasm] Awesome what can do without code huh? [/Sarcasm]

It's probably somewhat feasible using purely SDK work. One thing I'd suggest is making the vehicle as compact as possible so that fits inside a standard-sized portal. That way you wouldn't have to worry about resizing the portals so the vehicle would fit.

Honestly though, you would probably have to water it down to having both players control the turret/vehicle remotely from a control station or something, and not actually have them in the vehicle. I think using that method would be the most reliable way.

I just don't think it's possible to have two players in a properly-working vehicle in Portal 2. I believe the team for the mod Orion did it, but it was on a much older build of Source, and they've dropped Source for their game altogether I think, or they're going commercial at the very least. Vehicles were never executed all that well in Source to begin with. They've always had awkward physics and poor handling.

I guess I overestimated the scope of the SDK. So without Portal 2's source code, there is no modding possible to Portal 2 such as coding new vehicle mechanics? My knowledge lies mostly with 2D/3D graphics, with some Hammer experience.

You can 'only' use scripting in hammer and models etc. when using the Portal 2 SDK. But even without coding you can do quite a bit, Coretex Cluster is completely scripted in Portal, which has no code access as well.

I assume you can do custom squirrel scripts in portal 2. Anyway, it's definitely possible.
