Steam, Tracks, Trouble & Riddles: Episodic Release Survey

Postby peegee on Tue Jul 05, 2011 10:40 am

Hi friends,

since 2009 I am now working on
the mod Steam, Tracks, Trouble & Riddles.

If I will continue with this rate of development
the estimated release date of the whole project
will be in about 5 to 7 years (Valve Time).

But if i would release chapter by chapter,
(there are five chapters)
the release of the first chapter could maybe
come in about 9 to 12 month.

Please tell me what you prefer.
Thank you very much!

The survey i running till July 19th, 2011

As long as their isn't a huge gap between, sure.

I hate episodes, I rather wait once and get all the stuff
then wait > get teased by short bit > wait some more > more teasing > wait > etc

Episodic model.

As long as you don't do it like Valve you should be fine.

Did my comment on youtube yesterday pushed you to start this survey? I love this mod, so i clicked "episodes" because the faster I can play something of it, the better.

I think for a mod an episodic release schedule will do better.
Just remember to keep things organized and not spend a million years making the "next episode bigger"...

Id like to get all content in one game then in short episodes. Too often the episodic model is an excuse to cut down content that was supposed to be in the game just to claim "this is only the first episode" and never release anything after it.

OK: 11 vs 12.

This result is not that significant
in statistic terms. This is no football game with winners and losers.

Which means, however the release will happen, it is the wrong way.

Button pressed..........................

I will reconsider this, maybe I will cut this mod into 2 parts with 3 chapters each.
Tell me your opinion. ¬_¬

Just take how ever long you have been working on it, figure out what % you are finished.

1 year >25% episodes
2 years >50% episodes
anything better than that, just release it all at once.

Because its so tight between them why not make episodic releases and then when the entire game is done
release a bundle? or like a complete install with all the episodes in one package?

When TV shows make episodes they will often film the all or most of the episodes before releasing the first one so that they are finishing up post-production on the end of the season while the middle of the season airs (sometimes they fall behind though and we get mid-season breaks).

I think that is what you should do. Make most of it and then release episodically.

Also if it is going to take that long maybe you should scale back your ambition.

That was my first plan. Thank you.

Thank you for your advice.

This seems to be the best solution.
Thank you all for opinions and help!
When my computer is back from the repair shop next week,
I will set up the first chapter.
Stay tuned
