Source Media Arcade version 2 is finished

Postby SM Sith Lord on Sat Nov 19, 2011 12:01 pm

I have finally finished my Source engine mod Source Media Arcade 2 and it is posted on ModDb and Desura for download.

It's not your average Source engine mod. It is like an interactive 3D desktop. You place shortcuts in it, you launch stuff from it, but your Start menu (as well as other windows) open right in-front of it.

This FULL release version has MANY improvements over the beta released last year. It is actually a complete re-write of the project, now based on the Source SDK Base 2007 MULTIPLAYER code.

The utility is very simple and user-friendly this time around. As long as you understand the basic concept, using the mod is a breeze and there is in-line help for each menu to aid new users.

I have also posted an extensive Official User's Manual on ModDb for anybody who wishes to get the most out of the mod.

Main Features:
  • Spawn shortcuts to your personal files and applications in your favorite maps, GMod-style
  • Automatically download posters and fan-art to display on movie, tv show, or game shortcuts
  • Browse your media collection in virtual 3D
  • Launch nearly any game, file, or application
  • Automatic IDLE mode so you can play your games at maximum framerates
  • Emulator support
  • Peer-hosted Multiplayer Arcades
  • Customizable download links and Search Providers to help you share your media collection

Looks good in a way.
But for the trailer, please show what the program is about rather than showing movie clip with icons flying around on them =/

Not sure I completely understand the point in this. The website doesn't give any information regarding what this actually is :o

The concept behind the mod is pretty hard to communicate some times. All the random media in the trailer is to illustrate that the mod is about launching your games and movies, not shooting stuff. :D

As far as what the mod IS, it is a media center with a few twists.
Twist 1: it has a 3D view for you to organize your games and movies in
Twist 2: it helps you find places to buy or download any games or movies you don't have
Twist 3: it has multiplayer mode so you can share your media collection with your friends

Plus its just a hell of a lot of fun if you play tons of video games or watch a lot of movies, like I do. When you're done with one game or movie, there is literally a room full of others to play next. Like 3D virtual playlists that you can walk around in.

Although it is impressive that you managed to do this, honestly was it nessasery?

I think its awesome.

Its like how they show the internet on every movie ever.

Good work, very innovative.

Thanks for the compliments.

All the existing 3D frontends were either lame or outdated, so I had to make my own. I figured other people could enjoy it too, so I tried real hard to make it user friendly and easy to learn.

Am I correct in assuming you can't launch other Source engine games?

Correct. Apparently having 2 instances of the Source engine running an the same time would rip a hole in the universe.

Hell yeah it was. Even if his mod ultimately doesn't get used a lot, he can still throw it in a portfolio he might be working on. I personally think what he's accomplished is really impressive.

Good work man. It's got a lot of potential. I think it would be really neat if you had a room full of players watching a movie in a 3D movie theater.

I remember playing on a Gmod server with a mod called "Gmod Tower." It was a social-based game where you owned an apartment and customized it by buying things with money you earned from playing mini games with other players. There was also a huge theater room where you could add a Youtube video link to the queue and it would stream the video on a huge screen for everyone to see. Your mod reminds me of that, but with more depth.
