CrossbowVille Mapping Competition

Postby planetphillip on Wed Nov 30, 2011 9:08 am

I am pleased to announce my next mapping competition
CrossbowVille.

Full details can be found on its page: http://www.planetphillip.com/projects/crossbowville/

This competition is being sponosred by SteamContests.Com and Tt eSports.

First prize is a MEKA G1 keyboard and $50 cash paid ONLY via PayPal.

Second prize is a Black Element gaming mouse and $25 cash paid ONLY via PayPal.

Other prizes may be added at the discretion of the sponsors and Phillip.

The timing is incredibly bad, seeing as GameBanana has a mapping competition at exactly the same time and very similar. Unfortunately, I had this planned for a while and the sponsors already set up.

Closing date: Monday 9th January 2012

Don't worry, Phillip, GameBanana is a cesspool. Plus, real money and real swag will trump Steam credits all day long. Your competition is much better.

@ Banter: WE WILL WIN NOTHING IF IT'S JUST YOU AND ME. We need to seduce some young defenseless mappers into this competition as cannon fodder.

If phillip allowed entrants to ship their own binaries (even if under the pretense that your code must be mostly isolated from everyone elses entries) then I would soooooooooooooooo be in.

I'd really like to see some game-related programming challenges every once and a while. Not necessarily from phillip, but just in general. Most competitions seem to be really algorithm, math, and efficiency based. There are really no game/fun themed challenges that are relevant to gamedev :(

When I first looked on planetphillip and saw a new competition, I initially though I had some sort of chance.
Then I came on interlopers to find everyone else on here is entering

Well shit

Ah well, it should be fun. Best of luck all

dude you should totally enter!! the more the merrier!! it doesn't have to be a long map. maybe you could just do a shooting range that gets attacked by the combine? or you could do a mission where the player has to defend a rooftop from combine who are pouring in from all sides???

seriously, the more the merrier.

Pah, firstly not 'everybody' is entering - just a few I've seen so far, and most people won't have the staying power to get it done over the Christmas break.

Go for it. I lost PP's writing competition and I'm supposed to be doing an English degree!

I tend to agree. How do you think I feel about the lack of shadow mapping support such as the rendertartget=<framebuffer limitation, lack of parenting, and over-filtered projectedtextures in stock binaries(though EP2 using the 2009 engine should help with shadow mapping itself)?

Though, he talks about adding winner's entries to a mod. So multiple binaries might not be easy to combine, especially if one interferes with another.
