Raising the bar Mod

Postby Bokerjkm on Thu Jan 17, 2013 12:25 pm

Hi, i'm Boker, Raising the bar mod leader, Raising the bar is based on the book Half-Life 2: Raising the bar, this book revealed many of the game's original settings and action that were either cut down or removed entirely from the final game. Half-Life 2 was originally intended to be a far darker atmosphere on far grittier artwork where the combine were more obviously draining the oceans for minerals and replacing the atmosphere with noxious, murky gases.

On the original storyline you would fight alongside characters, Captain Vance, Odell, Eli...
Several maps was removed from original game maybe because HL2 was leaked.

This Mod will be the original storyline from HL2 Alpha, with complete new models, new maps, and the original removed characters and story line and this will be a complete Mod, don't wait to a separate mappacks, when the Mod finished with original dialogs, and storyline it will be uploaded as a full MOD.

What I don't understand about all these beta recreation mods is why there are so many of them all trying to do the same thing. Why don't they join together and make a collaberative effort, the chances of finishing the mod will be much higher.

I am sure there are many more of these ...

I see than you don't understand, Missing Information is only a mappack from the Leak mappack, no storyline, no new maps, only coverts to HL2 Retail, nothing awesome, but is nice...
Dark Interval looks more good, they are making new maps and recreating some things, but they will not recreate the original storyline, only mappacks but made by they.

Raising the bar is a complete storyline with new maps, new models, new textures, new sounds, new ost... All new and HD.

You say that but.. Can you say me how many people are making Mods from BlueShift, OForce, or in relation with Blackmesa?

I applaud your effort but what sticks out to me is that the map screenshots look quite bland and uninspiring. If you're going to re-make something so old you really need to go the extra mile Black Mesa style. Re-create the areas with your own twist on the style.

That's a massive load of work, recreating Half-Life as Black Mesa took years of work and Half-life was only +/- 9 hours long, the beta (if comparable to HL2's lenght) would be about 12 to 20 hours.

I respect the beta mods way more then any game recreation mod. The ones you mentioned above bring nothing new or original to the table, while beta recreations do.

The stuff just seems so blocky in that industrial sector.

We was making that, but people prefer original maps, we have made Industrial map for example from 0, but we didn't show it because people prefer the original ones.

Not to mention BMS doesn't even cover Xen, which can take up to an hour alone to play through in Half Life.

I'll be blunt here. You have an astronomical amount of work ahead of you if you want to recreate the beta while maintaining a really high level of quality. BMS took several years to make and the team was pretty massive. There was a TON of drive behind BMS and I think at one point the whole project almost failed entirely. They had the game "completed" at a certain point, but when playing through it they realized how unpolished it looked overall, so they spent another whole year or so just to overhaul all the visual assets and to make sure the same level of quality was maintained throughout the game.

Judging by the screen shots and stuff on the Moddb page, you've got a pretty rough start. Some of the maps just look plain hideous. Unless you can really show that this mod has way more potential than all the other beta mods out there, not many people are going to want to get behind it. You'll need a decently sized team with the drive and talent in order to even complete this and have it looking nice and pretty like BMS or Valve's games.

There's no reason you couldn't join missing information and help them add a story line to the maps they already have (unless they don't want that)

That's actually not true. If you read our website you'd know we're not doing that. We've realized that its not possible (and pointless due to the similarity of some chapters) to recreate the entire storyline.
