So Ep2 breaks and all the dialogue can't be found. Characters stand around looking dumb when they should be talking.
In the SDK I lose all potential dialogue from EP2 severely limiting what Alyx can say and do when building my mod.

If you enter the beta (game properties/betas/beta-steampipe beta) your games will be moved to the common folder, fixing that issue with the missing dialogue

This update moves all content for HL2 games over to the VPK format (like Left 4 Dead 2 etc..). This is all well and good (its easier to package mods and a more efficient format) however the old SDK can't access the VPK files. So that's it, if you upgrade you'll lose all access to the SDK tools.

HL2 hasn't been updated to allow for vpk addons either. So you can add an addon folder and put your VPK mods in it, but there's no way to activate them. We're left somewhere in limbo.

You are not yet required to release your mod as a vpk, mods still go into the sourcemods folder. However Valve is planning to add addon vpk support to HL2.

For TF2, DOD and CS:S they've released a Beta version of the SDK and you can find those tools in the bin folder within the game directory but that update has not happened for the HL2 games.

If you're having problems accessing the SDK for HL2/ep1/ep2 and Portal, you can fix this by editing the directory path:
in the sdk => edit game configurations => select the game you're mapping for => edit => set the directory to "c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life 2\ep2" or whereever your steam common directory is stored.

It sounds weird but I'm so utterly depressed about all this. I was about 2 days away from releasing a project that I've been working on for over a year now. I didn't realise how dependent I was on HL2 mapping until it's gone.

LOL This is not healthy.

This will only cause a slight delay, Valve is allready working on fixes for many issues, including a much needed sdk update!

Thanks Marnamai for taking the time to answer this.

I've already re-directed the SDK paths and unfortunately when I open my Ep2 maps I get the following error:

"Failed to load the default scheme file. The map views may be missing some visual elements."

Then I get a fatal error
"Model models/map12_bigbaddaboom/debris7.mdl not found and models/error.mdl couldn't be loaded"

Hammer then crashes.

Have you tested the solution you suggested?
Has it worked for anyone else?

The Gameinfo updates are a godsend. thanks for this.

Crap, seems like I haven't tested it thoroughly. I 'm also getting the "failed to load the default scheme file. The map views may be missing some visual elements."

I 'll see what I can find out about it.

Managed to get my mod map open by configuring sdk for ep1 to point at old directory.
Obviously Ep2 content missing but can still do basic editing or build new maps with Ep1 content if you need to.

Give it a go and see if you can too.

By using the updated tf2 beta sdk, we could potentially create an edited configuration to map for ep2
- adding an extra configuration
- loading HL2's fgd
- setting the game executable and directory to the right folder in common
- using the old build tools from the old sdk (build programs bsp/viss/vrad)

I haven't tried it yet, because I am redownloading the sdk at the moment.

edit: by using a custom setup with the beta sdk (hammer launched via common/tf/bin/tools/Hammer.exe)
I can open and edit my mod's map's (ep2) however all the ep2 models and materials are missing.

I am pretty sure it can be worked around by extracting all of ep2's materials and models in tf2's directory, far from ideal but atleast it allows us to continue mapping.

I just want to make sure you said we need to copy/paste ep2's assets into tf2's directory as part of our expedition to work around this oh-so-minor "slight delay".

Extracting the content into the tf2 folder worked for me.

I am trying out another fix by editing the gameinfo.txt of tf2 to load ep2 content without having to extract it.

EDIT: Gameinfo editing wasn't succesfull.

Yeah I´ve been experimenting that and other shit too. Even the no-steampipe-version has been being constantly updated (just notice how dll and exe files change their date and size every day)

So on the advice of a few online, I upgrade to the Steampipe version of EP2.

BIG MISTAKE!

Out of desperation I did that yesterday. While I was waiting for the thing to end I began to realize how many things would stop working. so sad.

I´m also very depressed, i had one the maps done and was about to release it as solo and then all of a sudden it began to have many bugs and terrible performance problems.

Yesterday I joined that github thing just to track and posibly post bug reports myself. When you see the list of bugs, the dates they were reported and the answers. You lose all hopes. Many people seem to be posting stupid bugs that dont seem to be related to the update, this will make the "fixers" overlook the actual bugs.

I'm working with the Episode One version of hammer and its fine. Exported the models and materials folders to the episode 1 game folder. It's compiling fine.

You can still map! It's ok!
