Half-Life 2: Riot Act Released

Postby Shr3d on Fri Jul 27, 2007 6:42 pm

Riot Act, a Half-Life 2 mod, is a single-player mod which centers around a character called Jamil Lee, a young rebel imprisoned by the combine. The mod is estimated at around 1.5 hours playtime and features HDR, something very few mods have utilized thus far. Seems really interesting and their level design is great.

You can view a high-resolution trailer here or for a download link click here (requires moddb account) or here or off the minerva website.

With the weekend coming up, give it a go, this one is for sure a 'developed' mod, not a simplistic rushed one.

You should get an account anyway. No more mirrors at the moment. I'll bump this thread up and update it when the mod leader informs me.

Here is a new mirror.

I 've just finnished the mod (playtime +/- 1h30)
Its top notch quality but some places where a little too empty. I had a deja-vu feeling in some of the maps, since they are heavly based on the Nova Prospect level.

Its not a bad thing because the quality easly matches valve's HL2 in both estetic and gameplay value.

Hmm, the installer for this doesn't work if you don't have steam installed to the default "programfiles/" directory which isn't great, it just comes up with the message "It seems like you don't have steam installed! You need to install steam in order to play Half-life 2 Riot Act 1.0.".

If anyone else has installed there steam to a different directory you can just use 7-zip to extract all the files and put the folder in source mods :).

This was an absolutely fantastic mod, one if the best SP mods I've ever played for HL2. Really worth the download, plenty of action and great level-design. It took me around 1.5 hours, and imo it needed some health kits in someplace's and more exterior detail to the outside buildings. But other than that it was great.

i looked forward to this mod all day, just to get conned into going to a friends house and hanging out with a bunch of drunks which sucks cuz i don't feel like getting drunk, so now i'm just watching all my friends act like idiots and wishing i had stayed home like a l00z0r. :x

i guess it will be just as good tomorrow.

Excellent mod. Great fun.. at least until you get to the apc's. I had to switch to normal, then easy, and I still can't beat it. I've said it before, more combine doesn't neccesarily mean more fun. Design in that area seems a little rushed too, although the arrival of apc # 2 is sweet.

EDIT: I had a brief glance at the walkthrough and it seems I'm an idiot so nevermind on that one. Coulda been slightly more obvious tho.

I'm also really suprised that the voice acting and music doesn't suck :)

Just played through it, and I must say; I am impressed. Definitely a worth-while mod. Very interesting to explore these other areas of the vast Nova Prospekt. But I ran into one big bad bug; after defeating the gunships and the Combine in the large courtyard, a citizen came along and killed my remaining antlions. That's understandable, since I don't think you could have a citizen squad and a antlion squad all at once. But that isn't the problem; it's the locked gate keeping me from leaving the courtyard. I think the citizen was supposed to open it for me, but he didn't. After killing the antlions, he just stood there. I had to noclip past the gate to continue. But that's the only major bug I encountered. There were some graphical glitches; such as the hole where the antlion guard comes in through. Seemed to be a gap between the concrete floor and the rock in the hole, exposing the rest of the map. Also, in the large octagonal room right before the big courtyard fight, I noticed one of the rappelling Combine actually rappelled onto the head of another. That's more of a funny bug, rather than a gameplay bug, and it can be easily avoided. In the last area, when the strider attacked using its ion cannon/anti-reality beam on the first bridge station area, nothing happened. Was the strider supposed to destroy part of the bridge, thus making the cable car needed? I still used the cable car, since I didn't know what else to do, and there was the risk of another train coming.

But now, for the parts I liked. It was nice to see these new areas of Nova Prospekt with different letter labels and different color schemes. The first areas were painted with light green (or yellow, hard to tell with nothing but teal lighting in those areas), while the last few areas were painted in dark green. That big hole right after the octagonal room kinda fooled me; I was never expecting it to rain headcrabs once I fell in. I also liked the part where you're riding the pod, and you watch the big fight next to you. Then your pod falls into a hole; I never saw that coming :P. The last area was really great; another nice looking bridge, and seeing the waves below was a cool effect (why didn't the official HL2 coast maps have that effect? :?)(I also know MINERVA used the neat wave effect on the island). I was scared when crossing the bridge, knowing a train could come at any moment (and when one did, I barely got out of the way ). This part was a triple whammy; avoid the strider, while crossing the bridge, and avoiding the train(s). The ending was something new to me, and I liked it.

Like I said, this is a worthwhile mod, and it's worth the download. I know it's not the best (I don't think anything could beat MINERVA...), but it's on up there.
