Dystopia January Update

Postby ad_hominem on Thu Jan 08, 2009 2:20 am

The Dystopia team have released another update, announcing a beta for their new stat-tracking system and the incorporation of SteamWorks. As well as these announcements, the team are showcasing a new tech video showing what they've been working on recently, and the first 42 achievements for the Cyberpunk mod.

For the last few weeks, the world has been quite busy dealing with hangovers and filling stomachs with Christmas goodies. In actuality, there is not that much for us to report this month because we've been taking a bit of a holiday break ourselves. We have loaded some of the last release candidate builds to the Steam servers, and they're quite ready to go. It's up to Valve to press the button now.

The video, and the full update, is available on their website.

Exactly. Kill "this" many or deal "this" much damage.

The ones in L4D were great because some required work in order to achieve. I hope they are holding back but it's great they added them.

I don't mind the achievements being just "kill x amount" or do x damage, seeing as they are just there right now for long term goals...

Why are there no de-chievements involving firendly fire?

Is FF on?: accidentally kill a teammate within a minute of being told friendly fire is turned on.
Fratricide: accidentally deal 1,000 damage to teammates.
Fratacaust: accidentally deal 15,000 damage to teammates.
This is MINE: kill a teammate and then pick up the health/ammo he was heading for.
i had fun once, and it was awful.

Sorry, I Never Played Baseball: accidentally kill two teammates with a poorly thrown grenade.
I Call it 'Spray and Pray': hit one teammate for every two enemies while using a mounted or machine gun.
Oops, Didn't See You There: accidentally kill a stealthed teammate.
(And the starter:)
My Bad: make your first teamkill.
Newfound Thirst for Blood: make your second teamkill.
i had fun once, and it was awful.

There is a reason for the dull achievements as urinal-cake on Moddb explains.

Creating achievements that are 'more complex' and require player intervention to do certain things (ie: Knocking a boomer back, and then killing it to avoid being puked on in L4D) require code on the client side of the game.

Unfortunately, we won't have this in time for 1.2, but we already have a few complex achievements in stone and ready for the first content release.

I've been playing this game for over a year now and have to say that the content they have been releasing does not do the new version justice. A group at the Dystopia forums put together a quick preview of the new version and uploaded it on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-p4ggrMNXg

Technically the game is done also and is waiting to be released with a mod pack valve is planning to release. Its up to valve to release this one now.
