Zombie Panic! Source Mapping Competition

Postby ad_hominem on Sat Jan 10, 2009 3:09 pm

The folks over at Zombie Panic! Source are currently celebrating the 1 year anniversary of their mod, and are spreading the joy to source mappers by announcing a mapping contest, with prize money of $600 on offer. The challenge is to try to recreate one of two classic Zombie Panic! (the original) maps: Club Zombo and Contingency.

Choose 1 or both Maps to work on, YES that means you can win $600 ($300 goes to the top entry for each map) if you enter both maps. You'll be provided with a Top down view of the entire map, reference images, and a walkthrough vid for each map. This is to give you a general idea of the maps design and style but is in no way there to hinder your creativity. We want entries that reflect the maps style but a HL1 map is still a HL1 map so expand and let your own skills take over.

If you're interested, visit their site to check out the full rules and to get the blueprints for the maps. Good luck!

The team as well as Donors who were first informed that their donations would go to paying for the forums and future competitions before donating. Our first competition was funded by our winnings from ModDB's MOTY awards for 2007 and prizes from sponsors like Noesis and xLR8d. I'm personally not comfortable with donations but this has turned out to be rather fun for us and the community.

Thanks for front page Ad. I had just submitted via "Contact" when I saw it was already posted as like I said in the submition, we had the Interlopers community in mind when we decided on the competition. Can't wait to see what you guys come up with.

Damn, another one?

Hmm... I don't understand one thing about the zpo_ preferance, wouldn't it be more wise to pick which one compliment's the map more and have that person MAKE a zpo gametype aswell, seeing as all the map layouts are going to be the same?

zpo "favoring" is because it takes a bit of thinking to make a map work well with objectives. It's easier to build a map for balance alone (not saying balance is an easy thing to achieve but adding objectives in as well definitely makes things a bit more difficult).

And like we mentioned on our site, we've provided the resources to help recreate the maps on source but we would prefer people be at least somewhat creative and expand on the original rather than make a carbon copy. Would be counter productive!

Good luck everyone!
