More Information on the Left 4 Dead DLC

Postby ad_hominem on Mon Feb 09, 2009 1:05 am

With there being a bit of confusion over what exactly you could expect to see in the new downloadable content hitting Left 4 Dead in the spring, Gametrailers.com have stepped up with an exclusive few minutes inside the upcoming new features.

Just when you thought the zombie apocolypse couldn't get any more horrifying! Valve recently announced its plan for Left 4 Dead DLC, and we've got the first look. Valve is opening up Death Toll and Dead Air for versus campaigns, and even more exciting is a new multiplayer mode called Survival, where up to 4 players set records for the longest time surviving hordes of Zombies on over 12 maps. This new mode will be available for download or as part of a special edition for Left 4 Dead coming this Spring.

So, it looks like the 'new' versus campaigns will indeed be Death Toll and Dead Air, as expected, and the survival mode is presumably a kind of stronghold mode, where your aim is solely staying alive rather than the progression through the level.

The "over 12 maps" to be available for Survival mode is most likely the maps already in the game that are best suited to the new mode, and not new arrivals from Valve. As a result it looks like the update won't have any new content on that front.

You can find the information in this video, at 18:43. There is no footage of the new mode as of yet.

I would like some REAL new content, please Valve. I mean... c'mon, unless those 12 maps are completely new, this stuff could have been done by now.

Well... unless Episode 3 is taking up their time...

BUM BUM BUMMMMMM.

There are rumors going on that they are sending a few developers to update CS:S seeing as, well, it's Valve's biggest franchise and still uses the out of date netcode that was pre-orangebox.

I wanted to do this EXACT same mode, as it's simple, but very fun and controllable. But ah well valve, thanks for crushing my Dreams again.

I think the major attraction of the Survival mode will be to mappers who don't have the dedication to create an entire campaign. Instead, they can make just one reasonably sized level which is self-contained.

I think it's much more likely that they've just removed some maps - like the final levels from each campaign, as they play like the survival mode anyway. Remember that these will most likely be played independently, like maps on Counter-Strike, rather than in a sequence like the campaigns.

It would be nice to see some completely new maps, but this is Valve we're talking about. It's going to be a Loooooooong time before we see anything from that front. I'm still excited though. Hell, the 2 maps for versus have held up really well, so even just the 2 more will be nice.

Hopefully we won't get hundreds of funyard maps being passed off survival maps. I'm planning on making a shorter 3-map campaign when the SDK is out, because I personally fatigue relatively quickly in L4D and never finish a full campaign.

Yeah some people just don't have time to complete the whole campaign.

I kind of want to do a mix of survival and campaign. You have to get to the end, and then see how long you make it.
