Black Mesa Interview, tentative release date

Postby Mess on Tue Feb 17, 2009 5:54 pm

Blog "Screen Play" has recently interviewed Carlos from the Black Mesa team, and both parts of the interview are now up for reading. The interview contains some fairly interesting tidbits on the team's development process, as well as a tentative release date of "Late 2009".

Saying that we have "updated" the AI is misleading. There was no point where we had all the original AI and simply upgraded it here and there; we studied, reverse-engineered, and completely re-wrote the AI. We've done so using the AI framework of the Source Engine, so our new AI will take complete advantage of everything the Source AI brought to the table, but when it comes to specific AI behaviour it's all been completely re-written.

Check out part 1 and part 2 of the interview for more.

Yeah, they didn't want any new Valve updates to break stuff, so they decided to inherit off of the existing baseclasses and create their own. I've seen some of the AI, and I can tell you it will be a pretty intense experience ;)

While they have taken what seems like forever to release a date for this, I'm glad that they've made sure to take their time and make it great.

ABout the reworked AI: If it turns out to be crap, it's still an awesome try. If it actually works well, it's gonna be EPIC.

Almost certainly. Valve won't want to let this go by without acknowledging it.

Valve would do well to put it on Steam works, more users for them. Everyone wins.
