Left 4 Dead Survival Pack Explained

Postby ad_hominem on Thu Mar 05, 2009 1:42 pm

L4Dmods.com, who in turn seem to have gotten the information from Official Xbox Magazine, have some new information on the upcoming survival pack for Valve's latest classic, Left 4 Dead.

According to the site, Official Xbox Magazine has had a talk with Chet Faliszek about the new game mode, and some ambiguities surrounding the free update. There's no better way to say this than how OXM have said it already, so you can find a quote from them below:

According to the interview with Chet, The Survival Pack will include "15 choice locations" from their standard campaigns. That is not all though. A new Survival map will also be shipped, dubbed: The Last Stand. "With nowhere else to go, our four survivors have retreated to a lighthouse on a point for their final stand.

Survival Mode, places the four survivors on an empty map. They then have the chance to prepare themselves for the endless wave upon wave of infected that will surround them. Once prepared and ready for action, a simple button is pressed and the battle for survival begins.

During the battle, you can expect to fight off up to four Hunters at once. Chances are you might even have to fight of multiple Tanks and Smokers. This fantastic new addition to Left 4 Dead will also sport some new music and a few new survivor quips.

Along with the new Survival mode, we will also get our hands on the official version of Dead Air and Death Toll in versus. We were worried that the levels wouldn't be updated and fixed like the current campaigns have been fixed. Chet assures us: "Both [campaigns] have been heavily modified based on feedback we received from players on No Mercy and Blood Harvest".

So we will be getting a new map after all, which is always good news. You can read the full post over at L4Dmods.com, or look below for the admittedly tiny picture of what might be the new level's poster.

Is L4D worth buying? I haven't got it yet and it doesn't seem to have the repeatability they claim...

It really, really does. It's still probably the game that is most often in my 360, and whenever I boot it up I have a blast.

I expect they're going to be specific to the new map - you know, where the survivors say something about where you should be headed or something? Or just lines used in the survival mode.

This sounds awesome. :D But...

"The Last Stand: This Doesn't End Well."

Aw, I always liked the hope that even during vs. a team can make it to the escape point. I guess that's not the point of this game mode though... I like happy endings.

When survival mode and the SDK comes out there are going to be swarms of funyard-style noob maps.

I want info on how custom campaigns will be handled by the server browser.

Huh, wonder if they'd been browsing the No More Room In Hell forums when they came up with the name 'The Last Stand'.

No respect, I swear. It's good though, good to see this 'Survival' mode is really just a super long never ending climax, and not something that requires anything different.

That'll keep NMRiH on top of the survival genre when we release :P

IGN have an additional preview here, with this particularly interesting quote about the survival mode:
How furious is it? Consider this: In all of the play testing that the Valve designers have done while creating this mode, none of them have ever survived past the 10 minute mark. We're told the company best so far was about nine minutes, with a team of elite players battling like crazy to keep one another alive. Our experience at Valve averaged around three or four minutes a round, but they're like the fastest three or four minutes of your life.

Sounds like brilliant fun.

Sounds like a good alternative to the rather long campaigns. Better for a short free time period in the evening :)
