L4D Blog - Snippet of SDK news

Postby Blink on Thu Apr 02, 2009 10:56 am

Over at the L4D blog they've posted an update about the matchmaking system, however one paragraph caught my eye:

This is part of the L4D SDK rollout, which is currently in a closed beta and will be released shortly after the launch of the L4D Survival Pack.

So if the Survival pack really does come out at the end of April hopefully we can finally get our hands on the SDK shortly after. Been roughly 4 months since L4D hit the shelves, and we're still waiting for the SDK so your guess is as good as mine as to how long shortly might be.

Check out the full post.

Hm very interesting. I just want to know why this is taking a long time? Are they having to re-code the SDK to fit in with the L4D edition engine? I look forward to survival although I can imagine some gimps finding glitch spots, cheats that give them scores of 999999999999999999999 etc. I hate it when cheaters ruin it for us good people.

For crying out loud, what is taking them so long?! There better be some major improvements to Hammer.

This is scheduled for the 21st, so they're on time so far. Still it's taking a long time though we all know how thorough Valve is.

Hammer will now delete all maps that aren't sketched out first.

I second this, Hammer requires an image with a clear sketch before you can do anything.

sdk's in closed beta? Because we all know how well their beta testers found all those exploits and bugs. Not to mention how an interwoven story seemed to drag down their morale. I can't help but feel like the end result will be a window with one flashing button.

ughh, I'm really not happy about this.

I'm holding out hope that these so called "L4D Authoring Tools" I've heard rumors of are gonna be the bomb.

Although, I can't really imagine anything better than the fully working L4D SDK. With, you know, like textures that work, and real func_elevators, and a drop down menu for inserting survivor names into info_survivor_position.

hmmm, sometimes I think I ask for too much.....
So I showed her. Gave it right to her like I owed her. That's when I turned from Shrek the Ogre into Master Yoda.

I am currently mapping with the "unofficial" SDK - everything works quite fine, so I can't imagine whats taking them so long. Perhaps advanced documentary on the entities and stuff? :-D
