Recent TF2 Update Hints At Major Things To Come

Postby KommanderK on Tue Apr 21, 2009 9:54 am

A new TF2 update has been released, with a few fixes and some minor game updates. However, one of the changes, "Reworked the character loadout screens to support future features", doesn't seem like a big deal until you actually go to the new loadout screen, where it now lists headgear as an upgrade. Gaming website Kotaku muse over this update below:

Each class appears to be receiving new headgear, which may or may not have an impact on gameplay. The Heavy looks like he's getting a football helmet, with the Demoman getting a 'Fro, as they call it. The Engineer's getting a mining helmet, and the Scout's getting a batter's helmet.
The most intriguing, though, is the Sniper's "tooth belt."

The same documents also list other loadout slots beyond primary, secondary and melee weapons, including an open slot for grenades, PDAs and buildings. Yes, that could mean that grenades could be returning to Team Fortress.

But the biggest potential game changer includes what appear to be Diablo II-like item attributes that modify the way weapons behave. These include variations on things like clip size, firing speed, critical hits, chance to slow targets on hit, Ubercharge rate and much more. Game files even describe these as having levels, naming weapons in the style of "Level 4 Medigun of X ÜberCharge rate."

If these randomized weapons drop from downed enemies, it could make the game very interesting.

The addition of all these potential loadout items may explain why Valve just added an option to permanently delete an unlocked weapon (or item) from one's inventory in the latest update. The developer may be limiting the number of weapons and items a player can carry in his "backpack."

Not sure what to think of this yet. I do trust valve to make a good game, but these updates are starting to seem crazy. Hope they don't turn me off the one fps game that actually got me to like multiplayer.

They shoudl wait until they have at least released all of the unlockabel weapons packs, before they start messing with the weapons before. It's going to end up being a completly different game to what it was when it first started, which may be good for Valve as it provides a "new" game for them to market, but it may put people off from playing who bought it when it was in its pure, unadulterated form.

On a side note, will the introduction of headgear mean that we may get to see what's under the pyro's mask :what:

The grenades have been in tf2's scripts since it was released so I doubt they're adding grenades. The hats are great since I now have 9 new model replacement opportunities. Random weapons is fine with me as long as valve finally adds in an sv_vanilla command that has 3 settings, one makes the game run without any unlockables or custom weapons, second makes it run with only the base unlockables, and the last one lets it run with unlockables and dropped weapons.

Usually Valve gets things right and I'll wait until this update comes out to see what is actually released and to make an actual opinion. I can't help but feel though that TF2 is becoming more and more like an RPG. Please, don't go the way of Dawn of War 2 TF2

Added the ability for players to permanently delete items from their inventory using the new Backpack menu. This does not reset achievements. Once an item has been deleted it can never be re-earned

Ummmm.... If I read this correctly, customer support is going to have a nightmare when people start accidentally deleting their energy drinks and ubersaws. Naw, that has to be a typo.....

that does sound bad, but I think we need to wait it out.It may be that you cant earn it again, but there may be other ways to get it.

also, I'm all over demoman with afro. I play that class the most, and I have a fro myself. win.

I am on the fence with this too. I love the fact that Valve is constantly refreshing their game so that there is always something new in the mix. However, I am afraid there is too much bloat coming in. If their changes are actually going to happen, I feel like the game will turn out like mis-matched mush.. (save for the sv_vanilla cvar someone mentioned), not to mention very casual/noob-unfriendly.

Personally, I would absolutely hate the addition of grenades. When I first started playing, I missed them, but then I realized how much more fun the game was without grenades. I understand that they can be used strategically, but they just seem like a lazy way to avoid teamwork and serious strategy/planning if you can just spam a room with a bunch of grenades...

While I do trust Valve to make this just as awesome as everything else they've made, I'm a bit worried, especially about the grenades. Sure, as Frips said, they can be used in a tactical way by skilled players, but let's face it: Most people are going to nadespam. CoD4 is a wonderful game, but is practically unplayable because of the noobs throwing X grenades into the enemy spawn every round, killing half the other team.

But hey, it's VALVE, they make mistakes once every 10 years or something. We'll just have to wait and see...

valve worries me sometimes, but right now I'm not worried.

Valve is vehemently against nadespam, it's something they've mentioned in every pre-release interview about gameplay and there are even commentary nodes about how much they hate nades and nadespam.

And I can garauntee that whatever they implement will not be spammable. It will probably piss off pyros though, nothing like standing behind a corner then getting a nade in your face.

I just hope to god that there's no stun nade, or no EMP nade that disables sentries.

I like the idea of it becoming an RPG, but that would be better to do as a new game. I like the TF2 gameplay style right now, and making it a permanent RPG would be stupid.

My idea is that they will be two different game-modes.

The first will be how it is now where you can use standard and unlockables. And then a different game mode where you can pick and use these hinted-at weapons. This way, people that want to play the original way can, and those who want to get an RPG feel can in the other mode.

Haha, I could totally see an April Fool's joke here. Go to Pyro, select "no helmet" and watch the game instacrash to desktop. I'd actually like that.
i had fun once, and it was awful.
