TF2 Free Weekend

Postby Blink on Thu May 21, 2009 8:07 am

I do wonder how many people don't actually own TF2 and are refusing to buy it based on price alone but if those need convincing then this weekend is the time to do it.

According to Kotaku, Valve are offering up TF2 for free play this whole weekend.

Seems a good time to stab some 'noobs'.

I think that those who will try it out will play other than those, because there is unlockable for other classes for new players than just spy and sniper
Seeing new, you'll understand everything.

Minors who aren't allowed to buy it from mom/dad would be my guess :P

I know this is going to sound like heresy, but I just don't find TF2 fun to play. The humour is great, the style is great... but I always get lost and then some ass-hat with a Backburner runs me over. Congrats, you spent ages grinding for items - whatever happened to being easy to 'pick up and play'? I always wind up as Medic in the end... bleh. L4D and DOD forever!

I've really got back into TF2 these past few days. Great fun.

@Guessmyname: I've just unlocked the Backburner today. No grinding, just normal play. Something like 5 hours of playing the Pyro to unlock it? Not bad in my books. I'm happy I have something to show for those five hours that makes me want to keep playing, rather than just the gameplay figure in my stats page.

I still think Valve are putting free weekends out too early. People are not going to get a good first-hand experience of the game when most of the players will either be a sniper or spy.

You know regardless of what weapon they were using you would have gotten run over right? If you can't follow the big fucking billboards with arrows on them / the flood of team mates running to the action then you honestly need get your brain checked out... there might have been some water damage.

Its a simple game, the maps are straightforward enough, and there is a class for everybody. I don't think people give it enough of a chance just cause its not exactly like counter strike or halo 3.

Undertow, this may come as a shock, but not everyone is going to like a particular game. So if I don't like it, I have brain damage? What a convincing argument. Have you ever thought of going into PR? There's career in debating societies just waiting for you!

Incidentally, I'm not fond of CS or Halo either. And I don't actually dislike playing medic... it just gets tiresome to run around with a ghost-buster machine after your teammates rather than blowing stuff up into cheerfully bloody gibs like everyone else. My point was that if you're not familiar with the maps or the classes, you get absolutely curb-stomped without a chance. It just doesn't seem all that fair, really.

@Bema: Really? Wow. I actually managed to get two achievements playing as Pyro for ~30 minutes... though I never actually saw what I did to earn them. They're changing the system anyway; it'll be interesting to see how fairer it is now. I'll give it another shot once the update is out... assuming I don't die of a brain haemorrhage first.

I understand why new players might find it hard to get into TF2. The game has being getting progressively more complicated since release, so unless you've being playing since then it's going to be a tad hard.

I do think it's a good game though once you get the hang on it. It's fun and highly replayable (even more so as it gets more complicated). Really what newcomers need to do is get up-to-date with how to play, so maybe it's an idea to watch some vids or ask questions in-game.

He wasn't saying you have brain damage for not liking the game, he was saying you have brain damage for getting lost on the maps when they have a lot of indication on where to go and what to do. So don't try to be a smart ass when you misunderstood what he meant.

And of course if you're not familiar with maps or classes you're going to get ploughed through. That's the exact same with any game, you can't pick it up the instant you get it. Especially if it is a little different than the norm. It is fair, it's called practise. Do you pick up a racket and assume you have some instrinsic ability to play tennis as well as everyone else? Most people on the servers (well not now with the free weekend) have been playing the game for a long time and know their classes and maps, at least the basics any way, so naturally if you just start you will get pounded.
That's the whole point of playing games though, is it not? It's the challenge that appeals to people.

That's a ridiculous thing to say. People think uniquely and interpret things in their own way. Nothing to do with brain damage.

I have to admit, I do go through phases of not playing TF2. Prior to my recent addiciton this week I probably hadn't played it for a good few months. And I think the Pyro is just an easy class to get unlocks with in hiendsight. I've also played 5 hours with the scout and only got 1 achievment...

I kinda have to agree that the game has it's problems, even though I like it. The biggest problem is that one player really can't change the course of a game, unlike CS or halo. If you get stuck on the crappy team, oh well, you're gonna get steamrolled.

That being said, I really like it when it's balanced, and I hope that I can get some free kills this weekend(unlikely, as steam reported my TF2 fragmentation as 127,000,000 percent approximately. Goddammit.)
