Half-Life 2: Calamity Released

Postby ad_hominem on Fri May 29, 2009 11:55 am

It's been a long time coming, but finally our very own Spas12 has released his Half-Life 2 mod Calamity. If you haven't been following his progress here or at ModDB, here's a brief description:

Half-Life 2 calamity is an exciting and heavily beta-tested new addon to the Half Life universe. Battle the violent combine regime, obliterate zombies and Xen creatures, and learn even more knowledge surrounding the rise of Earth's benefactors. Calamity is around 1-2 hours of solid gameplay filled with tense combat scenes and puzzling conundrums mixed within the deteriorating setting of one of Earths last thriving cities - City 17. Explore a hidden story twist in the climax of the mod, and enjoy every minute of the exploration and fighting. Thank you for downloading.

Just looking at the screenshots not sure about the quality of the mapping, it stands up yes but it doesn't look top draw, maybe looks a bit rushed. It could of course just be the screenshots but logic would say people take screenshots of what they consider to be the best looking parts. Be interesting to see what someone who has played it through makes of it.

Big mile stone. Releasing your own mod! What I saw so far looks quite nice man! Good job.

Think I'll download it soon. :) - Looks quite interesting.

However;
Highlight to read:
it occurred to me, some places (in the screenshots) looked like they could need some more polishing.

I've played it through to its completion, and enjoyed the gameplay. It's fairly similar to that of Half-Life 2, so if you're looking for more of that, it's definitely worth a download. I've done a full review on The Thoughtshake if you want more details.

The mapping seems to leave a little to be desired.

Congratulations Spas12.
I have played Calamity and I can say that I can tell it has been playtested alot. There were alot of really
creative ideas in this one. One thing I really liked was that the difficulty for me was spot on perfect. It was very challenging but never unfair.Awesome job Spas12 ! Can't wait to see a sequel!

A- for mapping, very nice but could use a little touching up, especially lighting like someone else said.
B- or C+ for gameplay just because of the numerous "SUPRISE! YOU'RE DEAD!" parts. Some of it was just unfair, when smashing up manhacks in a warehouse the combine rappeling down behind you to shoot you in the back was annoying, as were the snipers with no warning. There was nothing that hinted, "snipers up ahead, lookout" which would be OK if there was only one and you could quickly duck to cover, but when there are 3 you die pretty fast with no warning, which made it a little less fun to play. The climax really annoyed me. I got the idea that there was a bomb on the train or something, and I was somehow escorting it without actually doing anything, and then an infinite number of elites charge at you. This would be fine if you only had to hold them off until the bomb went off, but instead of an explosion it did something involving shooting lightning everywhere for a few minutes and then without warning I was whisked away by g-unit without even seeing the result of what I'd been trying to accomplish throughout the game.

It really was pretty good, sorry for the 99% bitching post.

Pretty cool mod. My biggest complaints:

- Lighting. It really was pretty bad in some spots. Some parts had circles of light coming from no light source in particular

- I don't know if it is my comp or what, but for some reason, certain effects/particles didn't work. Flames on exploding barrels wouldn't appear, explosion from rocket launcher wouldn't appear, and when I would shoot metal, there was no sparks. I know all of this stuff is in HL2, so it looked weird without it.

- Strange difficulty curve. I got to the first airship battle and quit after trying 3 times. I shot the airship 3 times, but it still wouldn't go down, and I couldn't find any more ammo for the rocket launcher.

Mine doesn't work at all...I load it up, but when I get to the in game menu, I get the Lost Coast background, with only the options of "video stress test," "options," and "quit." also, the title of the mod is showing up as: "valve valve valve valve 'I" valve "C" valve valve "E"...I really want to play this mod, any tips?

I can't wait for Black Mesa Source!

I've found my stay so far at interlopers quite good, and with a reasonable price.
