Gabe Newell Interview

Postby Blink on Tue Jul 21, 2009 9:17 pm

I've never heard of this programme before, but Good Game managed to get time with a couple of Valve employees which included Gabe Newell.

It's quite an interesting interview so give it a watch.

It's quite interesting, especialy the part with comunity based funding.
Maybe this is the best opportunity for the great mods to turn into great "commercial" products.
Image how much better will be all the mods that you love to play if their developement was sponsored by the community.
If somehow they integrate this in steam, the best mods and games will be REALY PUSHED UP by the 20 000 000 gamers that use steam.

GoodGame is a gamers TV show ran on Australian TV, its like G4tv's attack of the show (in some ways)

You might also want to watch the webonly benny&richy show at http://www.gamearena.com.au (Same sort of thing)

Was surprisingly entertaining compared to what I expected. Though the community based funding sounds like an odd idea in my book, though not necessarily a bad one.

I'm pretty sure he means community based funding for professional games, not mods.

@Chrille
Yes, it's about games not mods, but some mods are made by almost professional developers who only need a little funding to be called PROFESSIONALS and create awesome games.

Community based funding sounds like pure win.

Community funding is basically small scale investment, and would be applicable to both mods and games, however mods would have to buy an engine liscence and so would require a large following

Nobody said it had to be a Source-based mod/game. You could probably build a nice small indie game for like 5-10k.

This.

Valve is an almost unstoppable tank in the video game industry.
