1UP.com notice L4D2 'Realism' mode

Postby Blink on Fri Oct 09, 2009 9:53 am

The guys over at 1UP.com recently noticed a new mode when giving L4D2 a test run:

But, as we wrap up our playtime, David Ellis notices a mysterious option in the menu as we wait for a new match to start: "Realism mode." I ask Faliszek, and he coyly comments, "that's a special modifier that we forgot to hide for this demo." We then ask Valve VP of Marketing Doug Lombardi, and he quips that it's something for the super hardcore player, and slightly elaborates, "Take Portal for example: We had our best internal players who could blow through that game in about 30 minutes, but within weeks of launching it we had people on YouTube beating [the testers'] times by 10 minutes or more. Realism is for those players.

Sounds interesting and I'm sure it'll be a good way to prolong the life of the new game. You can check out the full article for more L4D2 info.

Sounds good. L4D stopped to grab me when I had played all four campaigns on Expert.

I'm going to guess that it simply lowers your max health and possibly disables re-spawn closets. After all, in the real world, if you die, you're dead for good. I can't really think of much else that would add realism, besides removing the zombies, of course. ;)

That's pretty cool. I would imagine it is one hit and your done kind of thing. When it comes out I will give it a try. I am not the best by any means but it will be fun to try out...

heh, I think the name might be a little misleading, I don't think zombie punches would really hurt that much in the real world. In expert mode you can't take more than 5 zombie punches to the face before you get knocked out, and probably less in realism mode.

So if they really wanted to be realistic, zombie punches could do about as much damage as they do on advanced :D

The game would be much harder if it was like Expert, but with the real amount of ammo capacity for each weapon, plus Clip system, not the old (stupid) single bullet reloads. Imagine having only 30 rounds in the AR, 32 in the UZI and like 4 to 6 in the pumpgun, and 7 each for the Colt 1911. That would be realistic AND hard, because you would have to think much more about reloading, if you would drop the magazine (or at least, like in Operation Flashpoint, still have it, but with the fewer rounds in it).

And yeah, taking only 5 zombie hits is kinda lame. But fun, still. :-D

I agree with Sathor regarding the weapons. The M16 being fully auto with 50 rounds is kind of awkward, but I guess it's ok for L4D. To me a zombie survival game consists of a huge arsenal of weapons with accurate attributes when compared to the real world. Realistic ammo usage also plays a huge role in the survival setting.
