Good read. I'm affraid its going to get increasingly harder to map due to the advancements in gaming technology. The attention to detail is awsome now, can't imagine how incredible it will become years from now.

Actually I find mapping to be faster with the new engine than the old. Now a lot of things that I want to add to my map I dont' have to make from brushes. Plus the compiling is much much faster and thanks to the displacemet tool I can make much more realistic terrain without having to manipulate each triangle by hand.

yeah I agree with spartan, also as the technology improves so will the tools, editors and such.

Yes, you can use models instead of brushes which goes faster. But if you want any custom content, you are going to have to make those new high polygon models, and those new high quality textures with their bump, normal and alpha maps.

One side of the new engines will allow for faster design, but the production time will always increase in some length.

Lol, I'm not a modeler but I have done some modeling and higher polygon models are also easier to make than lower poly ones. It's the tools that help make it easier.

Uhhh... I'd have to disagree... Making a high poly model with more detail would probably be harder than a low poly model with less detail. I don't know of a program that can make the 1+ million poly Unreal 3 Models that I've seen easier than the 5000 poly models are.

Like I said. The tools modeling programs offer today make making high poly models faster. Especially if they're an organic model.
