Natural Selection 2 Lerk Video

Postby Blink on Fri Feb 26, 2010 9:32 am

Unknownworlds have recently posted a video revealing the Lerk alien class:

It's worth heading over to their site if you haven't done so for a while. Plenty of cool videos to watch.

That looked... really stupid.
It just flys forward and video ends. No animation of stabbing the soldier, nothing. Just flys straight ahead and stops.

I'm supposed to be excited about this becaaaaause? (I'm also aware the game is only being sold for $10, so I'm not complaining too much about quality, but cmon using that as a promo video?)
It's quite simple really. I want to be a professional level designer. I want this to be my job.

I concur. I mean, the beginning was kind of fancy with the soldiers, but otherwise it seemed kind of meek. Maybe they could have shown more attacks, etc.

You could argue...that it was showing off their sexy cinematic editor which they use to create cinematic videos in-game. Honestly it's what I wish Hammer had.

Valve is apparently, according to them, releasing a cinematic editor once all of the TF2 meet the videos are done. (which seems like never at this rate.)

Tis' an ok video, I think the biggest problem right now is just the way they are directing these promo videos. They want to avoid what they did with the Onos in which people really disliked the fact it wasn't really much of a preview of the gameplay, but in exchange we get this video which, while I find it interesting and decent looking because I know how lerkers play, I can imagine someone who doesn't know how lerkers work would be somewhat disappointed by the video because they can't really see what exactly the lerker is doing... In this video, they wanted to probably emulate the type of movement you would come to expect from a player, meaning for game play standards going straight up and the way the lurker flies will not really be "realistic" as many people seem to be complaining about with this video, only because they want to make sure that people understand that this is a working game and not just a cutscene (I imagine that's probably what their thought process for this video was, that is...) I know the NS2 team has a few interlopers members in it (specifically for mapping) so they probably have a stronger say than I do, it's just something I've observed in the recent batch of media coming from the team.

For me, the only problem with this video is that they don't have the same animation team of say some bigger studios. The animations are amazing, for a team as small as they are, but I think for some reason people are expecting valve and blizzard quality animations, which is a bit much for an independent game. Regardless, I think the NS2 team is aiming for perfection and I very much enjoy the content and look forward to messing with both the editor and playing this game as religiously I played NS1!

It's rare to ever find independent developers who aim for such a high-demanding style game, one that relies on visuals. Most indy developers attempt to be "retro" in visuals, both because it's got a trace of nostalgia and is easier for them to achieve those set style of visuals. For an indy developer to have such a large scope, it's an inspiration to say the least.

I'm being harsh because they're now a professional for-profit team. Were this a mod I would have said it looked great and I wanted to see more.

They're getting payed though, and this is their jobs. I, personally so don't think I'm trying to act like an authority of any sort, expect more from a game company when they show off a game mechanic.

I'm guessing your not the sort who takes fondness to indy games then? Because, quite frankly, this is the best independent product I've seen since like... well, ever...

I understand you feel that this studio should be acting more professional, but if you would really not like to see much about the game at all until near release like most studios do at the professional level, then you should read the amount of people complaining about the lack of media this game had.

It's nothing really I feel arguing about, since your point is valid. However, at the same time, it feels rather harsh to independent developers who actually DON'T get paid as much as you are assuming they do. In a sense, the only thing that stops this from being a mod team is that 1) they made their own engine, and 2) they found a publisher willing to publish. Even mods can find a publisher, as long as they deal with licensing the engine and or visit the company who made the engine with a good product (how portal started really)

You also have to realize that Blizzard and Valve have a lot more developers than they do. Unknown Worlds is still technically the size of a start up and this is their first game and hell, they are even making an engine. At the current stages the engine is still not complete and refined. I applaud them for going the new engine route and taking the time to do things right.

Truth of the matter, their games will increase in quality as their resources expand.

I'm really utterly confused as to the thought pattern that must go behind this line of reasoning.

I get a demo to see if I want to buy your (possibly) shitty game. Making me buy the full game before hand just seems stupid on an Idiocracy level. I mean, if that's the way people want to run a business I'll just play the The Pirate Bay "demo" to see if I want to purchase it instead.

EA did it on pc with bad company 2 even worse, they called their 1 map 1 mode demo "beta" I ended up buying bad company 2 to find out i can't play it because of some random crash to desktop fails every single time. I guess they look at what the big shots do and do the same... ( not saying its the right way )
