Has Valve ever really followed a standard marketing process though? Making a half naked Chell concept just to get a few 14 year old kids to buy the game isn't something I'd expect Valve to do.

Making Chell attractive in a natural and appropriate way is no less reasonable than making her ugly, and in that case it could affect a much wider audience than 14 year old kids. What if they made her look like a piece of poo? Extremes are not the only option here.

Actually looking at it again maybe that is the newest "concept". It looks like a completed model to me while the one I thought was the latest concept doesn't have a model version. They could easily just change the texture though. I thought the one you posted was a test to see how she looked with more icons for readability by the robots such as the arrows on her legs. Maybe they decided to keep it.

GlaDOS performed liposuction to get rid of excess fat so Chell's mass is lower and hence she doesn't need as strong fall damage supports, which in turn saves resources and taxpayer dollars.

good example is that mod with the 2 vs 2 gameplay, some of the player models looked like unattractive woman.. it just felt weird to play as them

I agree... I didn't like how flippin ugly decadences' ladies were... Chell wasn't pretty in the first game, she's not ugly now... in fact, minus the sort of masculine jawline and angry face, shes kinda good looking... better than the first.
