It would be a simple thing to do, 4 scripted sequences depicting what is said by the present survivors whom are still alive. This would actually be the best idea since it would at the very least make people play the game until they hear all four scenarios.
I don't like this type of thing in a story, due to the fact it breaks continuity in the story. Which one is "official"? Also, if the story was written in a way where any character can have an equal chance of dying, I personally don't feel they did a very good job with the aspect of emotional attachment to said characters.
When Alyx was announced (or more rumored) to be killed, it was something people emotionally reacted to because we knew the character so well. To have her just "die" like that, it's a pretty big slap in the face (in a good way) and makes you feel bad. Same method was done ala' final fantasy (7) where players are driven to such a strong connection to a specific character and just when you get used to it BOOM, they're gone. Instead, Eli was killed off, and while some people have said that it was emotional for them, I just don't feel I had a true connection to said character because of how little you interacted with him in comparison to alyx.
Think of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, the ending was very personal because we had gotten to know Randle so well that the ending in which (uh spoilers? who cares) he is labotimized is a very emotionally traumatic experience. And having the narrator suffocate him with his own pillow and the description of said scene was done in a way that compared the wild and rebellious Randle to the now stiff and lifeless zombie.
Now, they're best choice would probably to kill off the most popular character, and put some good dialogue behind it. However, the whole killing thing breaks a shit ton of continuity issues in the story, because wouldn't that mean they either a) become a zombie? or b) can be revived using the chest paddles? or c) Be found in the most recent closet? I mean, I see l4d characters dying all the time! This is a bit picky though, but I tend to get picky with stories (don't even mention final fantasy 8 to me, completing that game recently lead me to a state of mental insanity and rage about how poor the story was (even though it had it's moments)) I'm also not a big fan of games that offer "fake" decisions, ones that say "here's an option" but it just ends up being option less. (
My Point Exactly) Nothing was better than doing absolutely nothing in hard rain and having the game just sit there idley, or just make a complete mockery of the story (JAYSOONN)
Long story short, cool, but I hope they do it right. If they REALLY wanted it to feel like l4d though, they should have someone rage quit instead. He just gets so mad that he puts down the gun and says "No, I'm out of here. See you all later."
