The point of a company is to make money, that is no different for a game company. While some game companies are willing to listen to user input and make a game for their specific followers, other companies, like Zynga, are working for pure profit. The games are addictive to that subset of people, while I don't play those games, I know those who do. I think that if you consider a game company better developers for working hard on a game, then many other companies would be in first. But, if you consider it a development success to have good profit, Zynga is doing great.
I still prefer Valve as my favorite...
I disagree somewhat. I believe that a developer like Valve isn't doing everything for the money. I truly believe that Valve is all about making games. I mean of course you gotta make cash in a business to keep it running, and you gotta find ways to increase your profit to expand your business, and I respect that entirely, but I don't think Gabe founded Valve just so he could make money. I think he founded Valve because of his passion for games, and all the other people at Valve are there for the same reason.
I would never commit to a career solely to make cash. I would want my career to be involving something I truly enjoy in life.
Like you said, it depends on how you look at it. I definitely feel that Zynga doesn't deserve to even be in this damn competition. A friend of mine who works in the flash and web business summed up pretty well what Zynga is like:
The irony is that Zynga is a metrics motivated company, they could care less about the player, yet the players love them. All they do now is constantly alter their system based on probabilities and trends to make more money. Which is why FV rakes in 100 mil a year, so I guess it's hard to argue.
I'd rather Valve lose to Blizzard in the finals than lose to a piece of crap like Zynga.
