So I take it you have a shit ton of textures of plastic?

I've never seen Phong do anything more then look like reflective plastic. (Killed Doom 3 for me as everything had apparently been given a plastic coating and turtle waxed RIGHT before hell broke out.)
It's quite simple really. I want to be a professional level designer. I want this to be my job.

Isn't phong pretty good on wet surfaces?

don't be so naive, specular reflections are an important and defining part of any surface, whether you're making a rubber ball, or a ceramic tile. it just needs to be masked properly. Even though in reality, I guess phong shading is creating more of a diffuse reflection, than a true specular one.

Man! That looks epic!
I just don't know what to think about the top down perspective... But whatever.

THIS should have been the surprise at E3... REALLY!

Wall looks like plaster, the ground is okay though.

Is dat sum sum phong on world geometry?

Or do you guys think it's just all model based?

I believe that little shiny part is just a flat plane model with an ice texture of sorts applied to it which they placed over a depression in the ground. Then they just applied phong to it to get that really slick effect. The gameplay video they released shows some footage in that area and it's actually just a large puddle that froze over.

Anyway, I really can't wait for this game and the SDK updates it will bring. I'm pretty sure these updates to the engine will only effect this game, but I think mapping for it will be enjoyable. I'm definitely interested to see how they made such levels with Source.
